Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Smashbox-it's basically what happens when Hollywood meets your makeup bag, and honestly? The results are pretty spectacular.
Born in an iconic photography studio where high-performance makeup was stress-tested on long shoot days, Smashbox creates studio-grade, easy-to-use makeup that holds up with no touchups, no mirror checks-just all day every day camera-ready beauty. And that origin story isn't just marketing fluff. The brand literally started in Davis Factor's Los Angeles photo studio in 1990, becoming a creative hub for world-class photographers, actors, models and musicians before officially launching Smashbox Cosmetics in 1996.
What really sets them apart is their obsession with primers. They're the #1 Cruelty-Free Face Primer brand in the US, and Davis created the Original Photo Finish Smooth & Blur Primer in 2000-basically the product that made primer a thing for regular people, not just professional makeup artists.
But here's what I find interesting: while other brands chase trends, Smashbox stays laser-focused on solving actual problems. Their mission is to develop makeup that solves problems, looks flawless in every kind of light and feels great to wear everyday-from the set to the streets. That's not just corporate speak when you consider they're literally testing products under studio lights where every flaw shows.
The brand's got this cool LA vibe that feels authentic rather than manufactured. At their headquarters, you can wear Vans or Louboutins, moto jackets-whatever feels like the most authentic version of you. Plus, their headquarters are super dog-friendly, so you can bring your pup to work if they have manners and fit under your desk.
And while Estée Lauder acquired them in 2010, they've managed to keep that indie spirit alive. They're still pushing cruelty-free, vegan primers and long-wearing makeup, staying true to their studio roots while expanding their reach.
