Editor's Take

Society6 is basically the creative marketplace where independent artists meet everyday consumers who want something more interesting than mass-produced home decor. Think of it as Etsy's artsy cousin who went to design school-except instead of buying handmade pottery, you're getting that cool geometric print from a designer in Barcelona slapped onto everything from throw pillows to phone cases.

The whole concept is pretty clever, actually. Society6 features art prints, home decor, bed & bath, iPhone cases, apparel and tech accessories you'll love with designs by artists worldwide. Artists upload their designs once, and boom-customers can buy them on over 70 different products. No inventory headaches, no shipping nightmares, just pure creative distribution at scale.

But here's where it gets interesting (and a bit controversial). Society6 gets about 2 million visitors a month, which means your designs will get a lot of exposure. That sounds great until you realize there are over 400K independent artists from 170+ countries all competing for eyeballs. It's like being a street performer in Times Square-lots of foot traffic, but you're competing with literally everyone else holding a guitar.

The business model is print-on-demand, which means everything gets made to order. Every Society6.com purchase is made to order and pays an artist. So when someone orders that funky cactus design on a coffee mug, Society6 prints it, ships it, handles customer service, and sends the artist a cut. For artists, it's passive income potential. For customers, it's unique designs they can't find at Target.

Recently, Society6 made some major changes that shook up their artist community. Society6 is shifting to a curated marketplace, removing thousands of artist accounts and changing pricing, fees, and submissions. They're basically trying to become more selective, which could mean better quality overall but fewer opportunities for emerging artists.

The platform works well for people who want unique, artist-designed stuff without paying gallery prices. And for artists, it's a way to monetize their work without dealing with the business side of things. Just don't expect to get rich quick-the profit margins are pretty slim unless you're moving serious volume.
