Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Sorel-it's one of those brands that's been around forever (since 1962, actually) but somehow never feels dated. Started up in Canada making rubber boots for people who actually needed them-fishermen, farmers, folks dealing with brutal winters-and now? It's the boot you see everywhere from city sidewalks to ski lodges.
What's interesting is how they've managed this pivot. Like, they went from being this super utilitarian, male-focused workwear brand to becoming a women's lifestyle powerhouse. And they did it without losing that core DNA of "these boots actually work." You know how some brands go fashion-forward and suddenly their products are all style, no substance? Sorel didn't do that. Their boots are still legitimately waterproof, still warm enough for actual winter, still built to last.
The brand's owned by Columbia Sportswear now, which explains the distribution-you can find Sorel pretty much anywhere from Nordstrom to Dick's Sporting Goods. But they're not running their own stores, which is kind of smart when you think about it. Why compete with your retail partners when they're already doing the heavy lifting?
Here's what makes them different: they've got this whole "function-first fashion" thing down. Notice how their marketing talks about "unstoppable individuals" and "bold steps"? It's not just fluff. These are boots that look good enough for a coffee run but won't leave you slipping on ice or soaking wet when the weather turns. The Caribou boot alone has been a bestseller for decades-that's not an accident.
And the price point sits in this sweet spot. Not cheap enough to feel disposable, not expensive enough to make you wince. Most styles run between $100-$200, which for boots that'll actually last through multiple winters feels pretty reasonable. Plus they've expanded way beyond just winter boots-sandals, sneakers, slippers, the whole deal. Still, it's those iconic winter boots that people remember.
One thing that's kind of fascinating: they're going through a bit of a refresh right now. New leadership team came in recently because the brand had been struggling a bit, and they're pushing this "For Bold Steps" campaign that's trying to merge the heritage outdoor vibe with contemporary style. Time will tell if it works, but the bones are solid. When you've got 60+ years of boot-making expertise and a reputation for quality, that's a pretty good foundation.
