Editor's Take

You know that feeling when you find a brand that just gets it? Southern Tide is kind of like that-except they've been getting it since 2006, when a 23-year-old college dropout named Allen Stephenson decided the world needed a better polo shirt. And honestly? He wasn't wrong.

Here's the thing about Southern Tide: they're not trying to be something they're not. They're best known for their Skipjack Polo, deemed by many to be the most comfortable premium polo shirt, and that reputation didn't come from nowhere. The brand started with that one iconic piece and built an entire coastal lifestyle around it-men's, women's, kids' clothing, accessories, the works.

But what really sets them apart is this whole "Southern is a state of mind" philosophy. You don't have to live in Charleston or spend your weekends on a boat (though it helps). The brand's about that laid-back, quality-first approach to life. Think classic design meets modern performance fabrics, all wrapped up in ocean-inspired colors that somehow work whether you're at a backyard barbecue or a beach wedding.

The growth story is pretty impressive too. In 2011, Forbes Magazine recognized Southern Tide at #27 in its annual list of "Americas Most Promising Companies," and that same year, the company ranked at #73 overall on the Inc. 500 list of "The Fastest Growing American Companies" and was designated the 6th fastest growing company in the "products and services" category as well as the fastest growing apparel company. That's not nothing.

Fast forward to today, and Southern Tide operates 33 stores across the country, plus they're sold in over 850 specialty retailers. The brand's owned by Oxford Industries now (same folks behind Tommy Bahama and Lilly Pulitzer), which has given them the resources to really expand while keeping that authentic coastal vibe intact.

What's interesting is how they've evolved beyond just being a Southern brand. Sure, they've got stores in all the expected places-Hilton Head, Charleston, the Florida coast-but they're also opening locations in places like Scottsdale and throughout the Northeast. Turns out, that "coastal ease" thing resonates pretty much everywhere. People want clothes that feel good, look sharp, and don't take themselves too seriously.

The product range has grown way beyond polos. They've got everything from performance hoodies and swim trunks to dresses and kids' gear. And they're not just slapping their logo on stuff-there's actual thought behind the construction, the fit, the fabric choices. It's that whole "built with a purpose" thing they talk about, and you can tell they mean it.

One cool initiative: they launched Southern Tide Recharted, basically a secondhand marketplace for their own products. You can buy and sell pre-owned Southern Tide gear, which is a smart move for sustainability and keeps people in the brand ecosystem. Plus, they've done collaborations with brands like Lilly Pulitzer and even partnered with conservation groups like Beneath The Waves.

The direct-to-consumer shift has been huge for them too. Direct-to-consumer now accounts for just over 50 percent of the company's overall sales and volume in this channel has more than tripled since fiscal 2022. But they're not abandoning wholesale-they've figured out that their retail stores actually help their department store partners sell more, which is a win-win.

So yeah, if you're into that preppy-meets-coastal aesthetic, or you just want a really comfortable polo that'll last more than one season, Southern Tide's worth checking out. They've managed to scale up without losing what made them special in the first place, which is harder than it sounds.
