Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Sperry-they basically invented the boat shoe back in 1935, and somehow, 90 years later, they're still kind of the gold standard. Paul Sperry, the founder, literally got the idea from watching his dog run on ice without slipping. He noticed the grooves in the paws and thought, "Hey, what if I cut similar patterns into rubber soles?" And boom-the non-slip boat shoe was born. That's the kind of origin story you can't make up.

The brand changed hands in January 2024 when Wolverine World Wide sold it to Authentic Brands Group, with the Aldo Group taking over North American operations. But honestly? The shoes themselves haven't lost that classic appeal. They're still hand-crafting boat shoes, loafers, sneakers, and those iconic duck boots that everyone seems to own at least one pair of.

What's interesting is how Sperry's managed to stay relevant without completely abandoning what made them famous in the first place. They've got the Authentic Original boat shoe-still made using techniques they've used for decades-but they're also doing collaborations with brands like Aritzia and even had a Netflix partnership with Outer Banks. It's this weird balance between "we've been doing this since your grandparents were young" and "we're still cool, we promise."

The shoes themselves are known for that signature wet/dry traction (thanks, dog paws), 360-degree lacing, and non-marking soles. They come in everything from classic leather to mesh and patterned fabrics. And while boat shoes might not be everyone's first choice for everyday wear, there's something undeniably practical about footwear designed to keep you from face-planting on a wet deck.

Since 2021, they've expanded to 2 specialty stores and 40 outlet stores across the U.S., so you can actually try them on before buying-which, let's be honest, is pretty crucial for shoes. The brand's also leaning into sustainability and that whole "nautical lifestyle" vibe, which works surprisingly well for a company that's been around since the Great Depression.

Look, Sperry isn't trying to reinvent the wheel (or the boat shoe, in this case). They're just doing what they've always done-making shoes that don't let you slip, look decent with jeans or khakis, and last longer than most relationships. And sometimes, that's exactly what you need.
