Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Stand Steady - they're basically the poster child for that whole "necessity is the mother of invention" cliche, except their origin story actually happened. New Year's Day 2012, founder Day Martin gets into a car accident, ends up with back pain that makes sitting at a desk feel like torture. What does she do? Builds a standing desk out of cardboard boxes. I mean, we've all MacGyvered something at work, but this woman turned her cardboard contraption into a legitimate business.

And it worked. Like, really worked. Since founding in 2012, Stand Steady became a leading retailer of workspace solutions, selling everything from standing desk converters to those portable monitors you see people using at coffee shops. Their flagship product, the X-Elite Pro, became Amazon's bestseller in its category - which is kind of wild when you consider how saturated that market is.

But here's where it gets interesting. The company built its reputation on that 90-day risk-free guarantee and a five-year warranty on most products. That's not standard in this industry. Most competitors give you 30 days and maybe a year of coverage if you're lucky. Stand Steady was basically saying "we actually use this stuff ourselves" - and they did, right there in their Fairfax, Virginia headquarters.

The product line expanded pretty aggressively. They went from simple desk converters to full standing desks, AV carts for classrooms, mobile workstations for healthcare facilities, even launched SideTrak portable monitors. They've been expanding their catalog to include tools for healthcare facilities and various professional settings. It's that classic small business move - find adjacent markets and serve them.

Now, the elephant in the room: Starting in early 2024, Stand Steady consolidated with other brands into Luxor. So if you visit standsteady.com now, you're redirected to Luxor Workspaces. It's one of those acquisitions where the brand technically still exists but operates under a bigger umbrella. Think of it like when your favorite local coffee shop gets bought by a regional chain - same coffee, different sign out front.

The pricing sits in that middle-tier sweet spot. You're not paying Varidesk premium prices, but you're also not buying the cheapest thing on Amazon. Their X-Elite Pro converter runs around $220, which is reasonable for something that's supposed to last five years. And honestly? For people dealing with back pain or just wanting to stand more during the workday, that's a pretty small investment in your health.

One thing that stands out - they really leaned into the ergonomics angle. Not just "standing is better than sitting" but actual thoughtful design. Pneumatic lifts that don't require Hulk-level strength to adjust. Desk converters that fit in cubicles. Products designed for real office spaces, not just Instagram-worthy home offices.

The Luxor merger probably makes sense from a business perspective - bigger distribution network, more resources, economies of scale and all that. But there's something a little bittersweet about watching a founder-driven company with a genuine origin story get absorbed into a larger entity. Then again, Day Martin turned a cardboard box solution into a multi-million dollar business that actually helped people work more comfortably. That's not nothing.
