You know what's kind of wild? Staples basically invented the whole office supply superstore thing back in 1986, and they're still here-which, honestly, is pretty impressive given how many retail giants have face-planted in recent years.
The whole thing started because one of the founders couldn't buy a printer ribbon on July 4th since his local dealer was closed. Talk about a "that was easy" moment that changed everything. And speaking of that red button-they've sold over $7.5 million worth of those things, with the first million in profits each year going to Boys & Girls Clubs. Not bad for what's essentially a stress toy that says one phrase.
But here's where it gets interesting. Staples has been struggling over the last few years and has shifted its retail strategy by reducing brick-and-mortar stores and focusing more on business-to-business services. They're not just your neighborhood office supply store anymore-they're trying to be this comprehensive business solutions partner. Following their failed Office Depot acquisition, they repositioned as a "solutions partner" for the business market with their "It's Pro Time" campaign.
The numbers tell a story too. About 840 stores remain nationwide, down from their peak. Yet they've been providing customers with office supplies for over 35 years, positioning themselves as the office supply expert. They've expanded way beyond just pens and paper-they offer laptops, computers, printers, ink, toner, and even unexpected items like luggage, smart home technology, gaming consoles, and décor.
What's really smart is how they've adapted to modern shopping habits. Whether you prefer to shop in-store or online, they offer flexible options for shipping, same-day delivery, or in-store pickup. And their Easy Rewards program lets you earn points on every purchase, plus they have AutoRestock to ensure you never run out of essentials.
So yeah, Staples isn't the same company that just sold staplers and copy paper. They're basically trying to be the Swiss Army knife of business supplies-and honestly, in a world where everyone's working from everywhere, that might just be exactly what we need.
