Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Starface-they basically took one of the most universally dreaded skincare moments and turned it into something you'd actually want to show off. And honestly? It's kind of genius.

Launched by former Elle beauty editor Julie Schott and entrepreneur Brian Bordainick back in 2019, the brand felt that messaging around acne products were "designed to hide pimples," and "aimed to flip that concept on its head, and make pimples, which affect almost everyone at different stages in their life, a more fun and joyful experience."

The star-shaped hydrocolloid patches-those bright yellow, pentagram-looking stickers you've probably seen all over social media-aren't just cute for the sake of being cute. They're made with 100% hydrocolloid, a material that's clinically proven to absorb fluid and help reduce the appearance of inflammation to shrink spots overnight. But here's where it gets interesting: Starface "disrupted the pimple patch market" with vibrant hues such as bright yellow, jet black, magenta and even rainbow and fun designs.

The numbers tell quite a story. Since its founding in 2019, Starface World says it has sold over a billion individual Hydro-Stars, and in 2024, Starface is on track to bring in about $90 million in revenue. That's not just impressive-it's a complete market transformation.

What really sets them apart is how they've managed to make acne treatment feel like self-expression rather than something to hide. The patches quickly became a fashion trend for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, with celebrities like Millie Bobbie Brown and Justin Bieber photographed wearing the patches while running errands, and teenagers posting vlogs on TikTok and YouTube sporting the patches to school.

And they're not just sitting pretty on social media. Starface products are sold in the U.S., Canada and the UK both direct to consumer on Starface's website and through retailers like Target, Walmart and CVS. The brand has essentially created a new category where skincare meets fashion accessory.

The whole "Big Yellow" mascot thing might seem gimmicky at first, but it's actually pretty smart marketing. Hydro-Stars are held in a smiling reusable pod, affectionately known as Big Yellow, who has become an animated personification of the patches, and a voice for the brand to connect directly with consumers, putting forth Big Yellow as a 'spokesperson' to share company updates and the center of engaging content on social media.
