Editor's Take
So here's the thing about State Cashmere-it's basically what happens when someone from Inner Mongolia decides the cashmere industry needs a serious reality check. The founder, Hao, grew up watching his grandparents raise cashmere goats in one of the harshest climates on earth, and he figured, why should luxury cashmere cost a small fortune when you can cut out all the middlemen?
That's kind of the whole vibe here. State Cashmere sources directly from shepherds in Inner Mongolia (where temperatures drop to -30°C, by the way), which means two things: the goats produce incredibly soft fiber because they need it to survive, and the shepherds actually get fair wages instead of getting squeezed by the supply chain. It takes 4 to 5 goats to make one sweater since each goat only produces about 150 grams of that super-soft undercoat fiber annually. That's a lot of goats.
But what really sets them apart is the price point. They're selling 100% Grade A cashmere-the good stuff-at prices that make traditional luxury brands look, well, a bit ridiculous. We're talking sweaters in the $160-$210 range, which is basically unheard of for pure cashmere. And they're not cutting corners. The company oversees the entire process from goat to garment, ensuring everything's fair-trade and cruelty-free.
The product line is pretty straightforward: men's and women's apparel (sweaters, cardigans, hoodies, bottoms), accessories (scarves, beanies, gloves), and home goods like throw blankets. Everything's designed to be timeless rather than trendy-the kind of pieces you'll reach for year after year. They've got this "hardcore soft" branding that's actually pretty clever, playing up the contrast between the rugged Mongolian origins and the luxurious end product.
Shopping's entirely online, which keeps costs down. They offer free shipping on U.S. orders over $99, and standard shipping takes 3-5 business days (even though the cashmere comes from Mongolia, everything ships from warehouses in the U.S.). Returns are pretty generous too-30 days to send stuff back, though there's an $8 restocking fee if you want a refund to your original payment method instead of store credit.
One thing that comes up a lot in reviews is the softness. People either absolutely love it or-and this is interesting-some find it scratchier than expected. That's probably because pure cashmere without blends can feel different than what people are used to from department stores. It's also worth noting that customer service seems hit or miss based on reviews, with some people praising quick responses and others frustrated by slow communication.
The sustainability angle is legit, though. They're transparent about their supply chain, work directly with shepherds to ensure ethical practices, and focus on creating durable pieces that last for years rather than fast fashion that falls apart. In a world where "sustainable" gets slapped on everything, State Cashmere actually walks the walk.
If you're looking for affordable luxury cashmere and don't mind shopping online, State Cashmere delivers solid quality at prices that won't make your wallet cry. Just maybe size up if you're between sizes, and don't expect lightning-fast customer service responses.
