Returns
What is the return window?
Sun Country Airlines allows passengers to cancel their bookings within 24 hours of purchase without incurring any cancellation fees. This is in compliance with the U.S. Department of Transportation's regulations, which mandate that all airlines operating within the United States must provide a 24-hour grace period for cancellations or changes made shortly after booking. This benefit is only valid for reservations made at least 7 days (168 hours) before your scheduled flight departure.
Are there any items that are non-returnable?
Flight and hotel vacations are generally non-refundable, but the airline permits its passengers to cancel or change their vacations after charging penalties. These packages are generally non-refundable. Additionally, any additional services or fees, such as baggage fees or seat selection fees, may not be eligible for a refund.
How will I receive my refund?
Your refund will be given back to you through the same payment method you used for your ticket purchase. If they find the things appropriate, the refund may also be provided as Flight Credits. Eligible amount is refunded within 7-9 business days if payment was made online.
Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Sun Country Airlines-it's kind of the scrappy underdog story of American aviation, and honestly, that makes it way more interesting than your typical carrier.
Based at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport with headquarters on airport property, Sun Country flies to around 140 destinations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. But what really sets them apart isn't just where they fly-it's how they've survived. Twice bankrupt, bought by a countertop company (yes, really), and now thriving as an ultra-low-cost carrier. That's not your typical airline trajectory.
The business model is actually pretty clever. Sun Country Airlines is a new breed of hybrid low-cost air carrier that dynamically deploys shared resources across our synergistic scheduled service, charter and cargo businesses. By doing so, we believe we are able to generate high growth, high margins and strong cash flows with greater resilience than other passenger airlines. Translation? They're not putting all their eggs in one basket. While you're booking your beach vacation, they're also flying college sports teams around and operating cargo flights for Amazon Air. As of June 2024, Sun Country's cargo fleet operated under contract with Amazon Air had grown to 12 airframes. On June 20, 2024, Sun Country and Amazon Air announced an extension of their contract to 2030. Under this new contract, Amazon Air will transfer an additional eight 737-800BCF aircraft to Sun Country, increasing the airline's cargo fleet to 20 airframes.
And here's where it gets interesting for travelers: they've gone all-in on the ultra-low-cost model. No first class anymore-just three types of economy seats (Best, Exit Row, and Standard). Everything's à la carte, which means your base fare might look amazing until you start adding bags, seat selection, and snacks. But if you're the type who travels light and doesn't need the frills? You can actually score some genuinely good deals, especially out of Minneapolis.
The airline's been around since 1982, which means they've seen it all-the good times, the bankruptcy courts (twice), ownership by a Ponzi scheme operator (yikes), and a 2021 IPO that made them publicly traded. In February 2025, Apollo Global sold its remaining shares of the airline in a secondary public offering transaction. They're now fully independent and apparently doing pretty well, with their eleventh consecutive quarter of profitability reported in early 2025.
One thing that's kind of cool: they're deeply Minnesota. Like, really Minnesota. They're the official airline of the St. Paul Saints, Minnesota United FC, and University of Minnesota Gopher Athletics. They partner with Make-A-Wish Minnesota and even sponsored the Tropics Trail at the Minnesota Zoo. For a budget carrier, that's a lot of community involvement.
The fleet is straightforward-all Boeing 737-800s, which means consistency in the passenger experience. And they've actually invested in their digital presence recently, launching a new mobile app and improving their website, which is more than you can say for some legacy carriers that still feel like they're operating in 2005.
