Sur La Table isn't just another kitchen store-it's basically the culinary equivalent of a candy shop for anyone who's ever gotten genuinely excited about a really good knife or the perfect Dutch oven. Founded back in 1972 in Seattle's Pike Place Market, this place has been feeding America's cooking obsession for over 50 years now.
What makes Sur La Table different? Well, they've got this whole ecosystem thing going on. You can browse their massive selection of premium cookware (think Le Creuset, All-Clad, KitchenAid), then actually learn how to use it properly in one of their hands-on cooking classes. And we're talking about the largest avocational cooking program in the U.S.-over 393,000 people take their classes annually.
The company operates around 56 stores across America, though they've been through some ups and downs. They filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020 during the pandemic but were acquired by Marquee Brands and CSC Generation for $88.9 million. Interestingly, they just bought Seattle Coffee Gear in March 2025, expanding their coffee equipment expertise.
But here's what's really cool about Sur La Table: they're not trying to be everything to everyone. They focus on that sweet spot between serious home cooks and professional chefs. Their staff actually knows their stuff-these aren't just retail workers, they're culinary enthusiasts who can tell you the difference between a santoku and a nakiri knife.
The classes are where they really shine. From basic knife skills to advanced pastry techniques, you're learning from actual chefs in fully equipped kitchens. Plus, you get to eat what you make, which honestly makes it worth the price of admission right there.
