Editor's Take

Here's the thing about Taft-they're basically the peacock that wandered into a room full of boring brown oxfords and decided to throw a party. And honestly? It's kind of refreshing.

Founded in 2014, TAFT shoes are produced in Spain and Portugal with textiles ranging from suiting wool, to woven upholstery fabric, to Charles F. Stead leather. But the backstory is where it gets interesting. In 2013, the husband and wife team launched Taft (their son's middle name) as a sock company. After multiple customers saw their products and suggested they sell shoes, the Stevens' abandoned socks and did exactly that.

So basically, Kory and Mallory Stevens were just trying to sell fancy socks out of their Provo apartment, and people kept asking about the shoes they used as props in their Instagram photos. Talk about accidentally stumbling into your calling. Provo, Utah-based Taft is now expecting to ring up $20 million in sales this year, translating its massive following on social media into a stepping stone to becoming a luxury brand.

What makes Taft different isn't just the bold designs-though yeah, they've got boots with plaid wool panels and hand-painted leather that'll make you do a double-take. It's that they managed to crack the code on direct-to-consumer footwear before it was cool. TAFT makes unique, stylish handmade shoes and boots - crafted by master artisans in Spain & Portugal, using exquisite high quality leather and textiles. We're talking Blake-stitched construction, premium materials, and craftsmanship that would normally cost you $500+ at a traditional retailer, but they're selling for around $240-$295.

The celebrity endorsement list reads like an NBA all-star roster mixed with a Hollywood premiere. Taft has enlisted bold face names like singer Tim McGraw, action hero Dwayne Johnson and NBA star James Harden to advertise the shoes. But here's the kicker-most of these guys just genuinely liked the shoes and reached out via Instagram. That's the power of having 608,000 followers and actually making something worth talking about.

Now, let's be real for a second. These aren't your dad's dress shoes. If you're the type who thinks brown cap-toe oxfords are "adventurous," Taft might give you heart palpitations. But if you've ever looked at your shoe rack and thought "everything here is so... safe," then you're exactly who they're designing for. TAFT prides itself on having an inclusive vibe among it's customer base, and on consistently delivering exciting new styles.

The brand's also expanded into women's footwear recently, which makes sense. Proudly introducing chapter 1 of our first ever women's collection, a new era of style and bold self-expression. We designed the collection with boldness in mind to ensure every TAFT for Her product is as iconic as she is.

One thing worth noting-they're not trying to be everything to everyone. You won't find basic black dress shoes here. Every design has a twist, whether it's contrasting leather panels, woven fabrics, or unexpected color combinations. It's footwear for people who view getting dressed as an opportunity, not an obligation.

And the construction? They're not cutting corners. Blake-stitched soles mean these can be resoled when needed, unlike cheaper cemented shoes that end up in landfills. The leather is hand-painted and dyed by artisans who've been making shoes for luxury brands like Prada and Gucci. So yeah, you're getting legitimate craftsmanship here, not just Instagram-friendly aesthetics.

The direct-to-consumer model means no middleman markup, which is how they keep prices reasonable for handmade European footwear. Though "reasonable" is relative-we're still talking $200-$400 per pair. But compared to similar quality from traditional brands? It's actually a solid value.

Bottom line: Taft isn't for everyone, and they're totally fine with that. If you want shoes that spark conversations and turn heads, they've got you covered. If you prefer to blend into the background, well, there are plenty of other brands for that.
