Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Tarte-it's basically the brand that proved natural ingredients and high-performance makeup don't have to be mutually exclusive. And honestly? That's kind of a big deal.

Maureen Kelly founded the company in 1999 while pursuing a PhD in psychology at Columbia University, because she couldn't find effective makeup that met her standards-she wanted natural makeup products that offered a glamorous look. Picture this: she's working out of her one-bedroom apartment in the East Village, maxing out credit cards, and developing what would become her first product-a cheek stain. The cheek stain caught the attention of beauty writers a week after launching in Henri Bendel. That's the kind of origin story you can't make up.

But what really sets Tarte apart is their commitment to what they call "good-for-you glamour." Every single product is formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, and gluten. They're cruelty-free, with 85% of their line being vegan. And before you think that means the products are somehow less effective-think again. They're the #1 concealer brand, largely thanks to their iconic Shape Tape concealer that's become a cult favorite among beauty editors, makeup artists, and regular folks alike.

The Shape Tape story itself is pretty compelling. This best-selling icon was inspired by the founder's experience with cystic acne. So it wasn't just about creating another concealer-it was about solving a real problem with a product that actually works. And work it does. Walk into any Sephora or Ulta and you'll see it prominently displayed, often sold out in the most popular shades.

What's interesting is how Tarte has managed to stay relevant in an incredibly crowded beauty market. They've leaned hard into influencer marketing, hosting these elaborate annual influencer trips to places like Bora Bora and Costa Rica. Sure, they've caught some flak for how over-the-top these trips can be, but here's the reality: it works. The brand stays in the conversation, and that visibility translates to sales.

The company's also genuinely committed to giving back. They founded the Tarte Loves Teachers Initiative, which clears teacher wish lists for classroom supplies that would otherwise come out of educators' own pockets. They've donated to disaster relief, supported anti-cyberbullying campaigns, and created a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called Heart to Tarte. It's not just marketing-though it certainly doesn't hurt the brand image.

In 2014, Japanese company Kosé Corporation acquired a 93.5 percent stake in Tarte for $135 million, which gave them the resources to expand internationally. Now their products are sold in over 20 countries, available through Sephora stores worldwide, plus Ulta, Macy's, and other major retailers.

The product range has expanded way beyond that original cheek stain. They're now known for their mascaras (another category where they hold the #1 spot), their Amazonian clay foundation, bronzers, and those juicy lip products everyone seems to be obsessed with. The Amazonian clay itself is a signature ingredient-it's supposed to help balance skin and provide better, longer wear.

One thing you notice when you dig into Tarte is how they've managed to build a community around the brand. They call their customers "tartelettes," which could easily come off as cheesy but somehow doesn't. Maybe it's because the founder, Maureen Kelly, is still very much the face of the company, sharing everything from beauty hacks to mom life on social media. There's an authenticity there that's hard to fake.

Tarte figured out how to make natural beauty products that actually perform, built a brand identity that resonates with people, and created products that have become staples in makeup bags everywhere. That cheek stain Maureen Kelly developed in her apartment? It started something that's become a major player in the beauty industry. And that's pretty impressive.
