The Disco Biscuits: Powered Down

Friday, August 7 at 8:00 pm (Main Stage)

This band brings the jams. Ever since its inception in Philadelphia in the 1990s, Disco Biscuits has been renowned as a purveyor of fine jams, endlessly tasty riffs and musical compositions crafted of the finest ingredients. They are ground zero for a delectable – and very danceable – brain treat known as trance fusion, two words that get us excited.

Through scores of albums, vigorous touring (an eight-year “set break” from 2011-2019 proved to be the perfect reset), and a host of band-sponsored events, Marc Brownstein (bass, vocals), Jon Gutwillig (guitar, vocals), Aron Magner (keyboards, synths, vocals), and Marlon B. Lewis (drums) have been enthralling audiences with their clever takes on both original songs and inventive cover choices. They even have an “alter ego” in Tractorbeam, a platform that gives the band extra room to stretch out with all-instrumental set lists. Though Tractorbeam stand-alone sets are somewhat rare, it’s cool to note that there’s a bit of Tractorbeam in nearly every Biscuit show.

For the Biscuit’s very first visit to Telluride, they’ll be breaking out a new concept in Biscuit history, the Powered Down set. First debuted in Chicago at the end of 2025, Marc and John wield acoustic axes, Marlon’s kit gets a bit stripped down and Aron cooks on the 88s, with a bit of augmentation. Intrigued? We are, too!

So. What to expect? You already know mind-bending jams are on the menu, served up by master class musicians. Allow yourself to get lost in the music and maybe even experience a disconnect from gravity. It will certainly be easy to leave reality behind, if only for a while (there are lots of good reasons to go on a magical mystery tour, right?). In any case, we love the audaciousness of bringing Disco Biscuits to Telluride Jazz Festival. You might ask why, but we say, “Why not?”

Lettuce: Celebrating The 100th Birthday Of Miles Davis

Saturday, August 8 at 8:00 pm (Main Stage)

Jazz legend Miles Davis was born May 26, 1926. He’s shining brightly from the cosmos now but if he was still blowing magic into his trumpet, he’d be 100 years old. The cats in Lettuce started landing on Earth some 50 years after Miles was born, but as musicians with jazz proclivities, it’s no surprise that the groundbreaking trumpet genius served as an influence on the band’s funked up fusion of jazz, rock, soul and mind-blowing sonic excursions. Lettuce – Adam Deitch, drums and percussion, Eric Bloom, trumpet, Adam Smirnoff, guitar, Nigel Hall, keys, Erick Coomes, bass, and Ryan Ziodis, saxophone – has gone as far as releasing a live set, 2017’s Witches Stew, a remarkable tribute to Miles’ Bitches Brew. The re-imagining of Bitches Brew is not only an ambitious endeavor, but beautifully executed. The vibe is mysterious and electric. Once can imagine the taciturn Mr. Davis cracking a wee grin upon hearing Lettuce’s take on his visionary recording.

Lettuce will use its headlining slot to lean into Miles’ work, an outing that we wager will be one of the most talked-about sets of this year’s festival.

This restlessly creative band also has a new release, Cook, and it does, in fact, cook. Since the band’s inception in the mid 1990s, their sound has deepened into far more than just another funky fusion band. They go deep and show no fear when it comes to venturing into new territory (like Miles). “This record is a little more three-dimensional than our past albums,” Adam Deitch says. “It shows a lot more sides to the band, exploring further depths of production and arrangements.”

Whether paying homage to musical influences or embracing new challenges, when Lettuce asks to “Let us play,” the answer from us will always be a resounding, “Yes!”

Don Was & The Pan-Detroit Ensemble celebrating 50 years of The Grateful Dead’s Blues For Allah Album

Friday, August 7 at 5:15 - 6:30 pm (Main Stage)

Friday, August 7 AT 10:00 PM (Sheridan Opera House)

When bassist, composer and producer Don Was walks on stage, Detroit will officially be in the house. The acclaimed musician has put together an ensemble that brings Motor City’s sounds into one simmering kettle of jazz, blues and funk in an utterly unique manner. Beyond the Detroit groove, this massively talented outfit will be paying homage to the Grateful Dead’s Blues for Allah, a record as fresh and timeless today as it was when it was released – gulp – more than 50 years ago. It makes sense Was and company will take on this record. His association with the Dead universe is long-standing. With the late Bobby Weir, he founded Wolf Brothers, with whom he toured since 2018.

Blues for Allah was considered a musical departure for the Dead, fusing its psychedelic sensibilities with jazz and Middle Eastern influences. Songs like Franklin’s Tower and The Music Never Stopped became live staples and the record earned praise for its willingness to push boundaries.

We’ll also be hearing from the Ensemble’s new album, Groove in the Face of Adversity, a record that Don says reflects an unvarnished, authentic sound that can only come from Detroit.

“There’s a unique sound and feel to Detroit that permeates the music in a way that resonates all over the globe,” says Was. “There’s a rawness, a lack of pretension, and an unmistakable underlying groove that reflects the people and culture of the entire city.”

Don picked a who’s who of Detroit musicians for this project including: Dave McMurray on saxophone, Luis Resto on keyboards, trombonist Vincent Chandler, trumpeter John Douglas, drummer Jeff Canaday, percussionist Mahindi Masai, guitarist Wayne Gerard, and vocalist Steffanie Christi’an.

May the music never stop.

Robert Randolph

Saturday, August 8 at 5:15 - 6:30 pm (Main Stage)

Saturday, August 8 at 10:00 PM (Sheridan Opera House)

For the uninitiated, it is no exaggeration to say that Robert Randolph brings the joy. From his position behind the pedal steel guitar at center stage, he steers the Family Band through a kinetic kaleidoscope of uplifting music. He brings the same kind of ecstasy he once incited in his House of God worship services, in the days before he was even aware there was music beyond the church walls, and a world that would embrace him with the same rhapsodic fervor as the faithful.

Robert Randolph’s live sets are reminiscent of those of Sly and The Family Stone. Each player brings commitment, joy, funk and love to every pulsating beat. The pedal steel – also called sacred steel in the House of God – is a particularly exciting instrument and Robert coaxes unearthly sounds from those electrified strings.

His newest record, Preacher Kids, earned him the 2026 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. It is a deeply funky, passionate testament to his love of the gospel, blues, funk and rock that informs his captivating sound. We just love him and are deeply honored to finally welcome him back to the mountains where his music soars to the peaks. Make a joyful noise!
