Editor's Take
So here's the thing about The House-it's basically been around since the Reagan administration, which in outdoor retail years is like forever. Started back in 1982 as a catalog company selling windsurfers, and honestly, that origin story tells you everything. These folks were into board sports before most people even knew what a snowboard was.
What's kind of cool is how they evolved. In the mid-90s they added snowboards, then in the early 2000s they ditched the catalog model entirely and went full e-commerce. And get this-in 2012 they threw bikes into the mix. It's like they just kept asking themselves, "What else do people who hate sitting still need?"
The selection is genuinely massive. They stock over 65,000 products, which is kind of insane when you think about it. We're talking snowboards, skis, wakeboards, skateboards, bikes, camping gear-basically if it gets you outside and moving, they've got it. They carry major brands like Burton, The North Face, Capita, and Salomon, so you're not dealing with knockoff stuff.
But here's what actually matters: their return policy is pretty solid. Most items can be returned within 90 days, which gives you a full season to figure out if that snowboard really works for you. And they've got this price match thing going on too, so if you find it cheaper somewhere legit, they'll match it.
The Minnesota connection is real-they've got a physical showroom in Saint Paul at 300 S Owasso Blvd E, though let's be honest, most people are shopping online. Free shipping over $99 makes that pretty easy.
One thing that stands out is their whole vibe. They talk about forming "a symbiotic relationship among cultures, sports, and lifestyles" and actually test the gear they sell. It's not just corporate speak-you get the sense these are people who actually use this stuff on weekends.
