Returns

What is the return window?
Most items purchased can be returned for a refund, store credit, or exchange within 45 days of purchase if proof of purchase/receipt is provided. Items purchased and returned in-store 46-60 days after purchase may be returned only for store credit (issued as a merchandise credit card) if proof of purchase/receipt is provided.

Do I need a receipt to return an item?
If your return without a receipt is approved, a merchandise credit will be issued at the current selling price of the returned items. Store Manager approval or Customer Service approval is required for returns made without a receipt.

Are there any items that are non-returnable?
Items marked "Final Sale," clearance merchandise, gift cards, holiday-themed items after the holiday, ear piercing services, personalized/engraved items, and shipping and service charges are not eligible for return or refund. Christmas and Hanukkah holiday-themed items can be returned following the normal 60-day return policy deadline, but cannot be returned after January 15th.

How will I receive my refund?
If a gift receipt is presented as proof of purchase in-store, the refund will be issued as a merchandise credit usable in-store or online. Any refunds for items returned in-store 46-60 days after purchase will be issued as a merchandise card for use in-store or online. If the original purchase was made online using PayPal, the in-store refund method will be in the form of cash.

Can I return online purchases in-store?
You can return items purchased online to any of their store locations across any of their brands. This is the quickest way to receive your refund.

Editor's Take

You know that feeling when you walk into a store and it just hits different? That's The Paper Store. And honestly, it's kind of wild that what started as a tiny newsstand in Maynard, Massachusetts back in 1964 has turned into this 100+ location gift-giving empire that people genuinely get excited about.

Here's the thing about The Paper Store-it's basically the antithesis of scrolling through Amazon at 2 AM. The company's CEO actually said that himself, and he's not wrong. For 60 years, The Paper Store's focus hasn't wavered from providing an experiential, discovery-oriented in-person shopping experience. They look at themselves as the antithesis of online shopping, seeking to create a customer experience inside their locations where you can touch, feel and smell the products. They've got fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies on weekends, water bottle engraving events, even ear piercing at select locations. It's like they took the concept of "retail therapy" and actually made it therapeutic.

But let's talk numbers for a second. The company now has more than 100 stores across the country and over 3,000 employees. And they're not slowing down-they've embarked on a five-year, $60 million brick-and-mortar-oriented expansion that will add 30 to 40 locations to its current 100+ stores and upgrade approximately 30 existing stores. That's not nothing when everyone else is closing physical locations.

What really sets them apart is the curation. The company offers "on-trend" products catering to a predominantly female demographic, with a selection that includes apparel, accessories, jewelry, bath and body products, stationery, baby and toddler gifts, kids' toys, jigsaw puzzles, books, and Hallmark Cards greeting cards. Other highly recognizable brands featured in their stores include Alex and Ani, Vera Bradley, Lilly Pulitzer, Kate Spade, Life Is Good, Vineyard Vines, Pura Vida, Hydro Flask, and Ivory Ella. They're also the largest independently-owned group of Hallmark Gold Crown stores in the United States.

The family connection runs deep here. Bob Anderson started it, his son John pushed for major expansion in 1989, and now Tom Anderson runs the show as CEO. They've weathered storms too-filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020 during COVID but came out swinging, acquiring 14 Hallmark stores in Florida in 2021 and launching their new Uncharted brand in Chicago.

And notice how they're not just about selling stuff? As of 2022, The Paper Store raised over $2,000,000 for charities in its stores' communities. Every year, the company holds a "Gift of Giving" charity event in its brick and mortar locations and through its online retail storefront. The event supports local food pantries, shelters, and more.

So yeah, The Paper Store isn't trying to be everything to everyone. They're leaning hard into being that place where you go when you actually want to enjoy shopping, when you need to find something special, or when you just want to wander around and discover things you didn't know you needed. In a world of same-day delivery and algorithm-driven recommendations, that's actually pretty refreshing.
