If your order arrived damaged, let them know within 30 days so they can replace it as part of their 30-Day Customer Happiness Guarantee. Photos are required as proof of damage and to help improve their packaging process.
How do I start a return online?
If your order was damaged in transit, fill out their contact form and they'll get back to you within two business days. The form ensures they have what's needed to help you as soon as possible, including photos.
Editor's Take
So here's the thing about The Sill-it's basically the company that made houseplants cool before everyone else caught on. Founded in 2012 by Eliza Blank when she was just 26, starting in borrowed office space in a tiny walk-up in New York City's Chinatown, this wasn't some venture capital darling from day one. It was pure hustle.
In the early days, The Sill was just Eliza running a bare-bones operation. She bought plants from wholesalers, potted them in her apartment, and hand-delivered orders on the subway to local customers. Can you imagine getting your snake plant delivered by someone who just rode the 6 train with it? That's commitment.
What really sets The Sill apart isn't just that they sell plants-it's that they actually want you to succeed with them. Each plant comes with an information card, but the website is also very informative. On each plant's page, there is a plant care guide if you scroll down. They're not just throwing you a fiddle leaf fig and saying "good luck." They genuinely seem to care about plant parenthood success rates.
The numbers tell a story too. Kick-started in 2012, they are backed by over $15M in institutional venture capital from first-class investors including Foundry Ventures, The Chernin Group, Loft Growth Partners and Raine Ventures. But here's what's interesting-before raising venture capital, The Sill was born out of a humble Kickstarter campaign and was bootstrapped for its first FIVE years of growth.
And then 2020 happened. While everyone was stuck at home discovering their inner plant parent, The Sill was already there with the infrastructure and know-how. Following the pandemic, revenue, assets, and profit margins began to shrink for The Sill. The company experienced net losses in 2021 and 2022 of $6.9 million and $6.7 million respectively. But instead of just riding the wave, they made some tough decisions.
The Sill closed all physical store locations and shifted back to online-only business, transforming into a full online garden center, requiring the scale and flexibility that only e-commerce can offer. It's actually kind of brilliant-they went back to their roots, literally and figuratively.
What I find refreshing is their approach to customer service. They guarantee your plants will arrive in happy, healthy condition. If not, they replace them for free as part of their 30-Day Customer Happiness Guarantee. That's not just marketing speak-that's putting your money where your mouth is when it comes to plant success.
