Stock Market Today: Stocks Decline As Earnings Season Picks Up Pace
Wednesday, October 22, 2025
U.S. equity indexes have been sagging all morning, but it might be a small consolation to know that it could be so much worse if you're a shareholder in any number of speculative and retail-popular small-cap stocks.
If you are, don't look now: Among today's worst-performing stocks are a star-studded cast of buzzy names that retail investors have embraced. There's energy aspirants such as Oklo, crypto-turned-infrastructure plays like Hut 8, and quantum-computing stocks a la D-Wave Quantum. All these names are down double digits.
Aside from these, stocks are sagging at midday. The Dow (-0.27%) is doing the best of the major indexes, followed by the S&P 500 (-0.45%) and Nasdaq Composite (-0.97%). The small cap-focused Russell 2000 (-1.45%) rounds out the U.S. equity indexes.
The declines come as earnings season begins to hit its stride. While investors have been positive about some reports in recent days, including General Motors yesterday and Intuitive Surgical today, we've also seen negative reactions to reports from Netflix and GE Vernova.
And of course we have a lot more earnings where those came from. After hours we'll be in for three of today's biggest reports: Tesla, SAP and IBM are scheduled. The automaker, software-services, and giant tech companies will hope to put stocks back on the right foot.
