PCE inflation gauge puts Fed’s rate cut strategy in sharp focus

After a slow start to today's trading, the bulls might finally be able to say "Happy Friday."

The major indexes are on track to snap a three-day losing streak, thanks to fresh Core PCE and UM Consumer Sentiment data. Both reports came mostly within analyst expectations, a departure from recent reports, which showed hot growth.

On the news, U.S. equities have been mixed but mostly green. The Dow (+0.44%) is an unexpected hero today, thanks to Boeing (+4.3%). The Russell 2000 (+0.33%) and S&P 500 (+0.19%) are also putting up a fight, while the Nasdaq (-0.04%) is nearly flat on the day.

Today also marks the last full week of the third quarter, which has seen stocks on a wild journey, courtesy of Fed-fueled optimism and strong earnings. If they can build on today's performance, they might wrap their final Friday of the quarter on a high note.
