Soaring student loans are weighing on the economy

The government shutdown has spilled over into its first full week with no quick fix in sight. But on Wall Street it's business as usual for now, even though we'll be going without key economic data again this week.

Right now it's the Russell 2000 (+0.97%) out front, while the Nasdaq (+0.56%) and S&P 500 (+0.33%) are in tow. All three have set intraday highs today and are on track for record closes. The Dow industrials (-0.18%) are lagging.

Helping the broad bump is Advanced Micro Devices, the market's top stock today. The chipmaker jumped more than 25% in premarket trading after announcing a monster deal with OpenAI. The deal will see the ChatGPT creator buy billions of dollars of chips from, and buy as much as 10% of, the semiconductor stalwart.

In other markets, the 10-year Treasury yield rose 3.5 basis points to 4.154%. Gold (+1.78%) extended its year-long gains, setting a record of $3,978.10 and inching closer to $4K for the first time. WTI Crude (+0.84%) sat above $61, while silver (+1%) rose to $48.45.
