Over the past few weeks investors have seen a lot of data -- and this week they'll get to see how the Fed has felt about all of it.
Tomorrow starts the two-day meeting of the Fed's policy-making Federal Open Market Committee. And most investors and economists expect the central bank to cut its benchmark interest rate for the first time since December 2024. Many Fed leaders are likely to prefer a 0.25-percentage-point cut, while a few want a half-point cut or no action at all.
But no matter what they decide, some investors are acting as if they're one step ahead, expecting the cut to be a "sell the news" moment that sends equity markets tumbling.
For how long? With more rate cuts potentially on the horizon, surely not too long. And while some have their finger hovering over the sell button, for now the Nasdaq (+0.89%) and S&P 500 (+0.49%) have touched all-time highs today, ahead of the FOMC meeting. The Russell 2000 (+0.34%) is also making inroads today. At last check the Dow was flat.
Aside from this week's expected central bank fireworks, we'll see reports from General Mills on Wednesday and Fedex, Lennar and Darden Restaurants on Thursday. And among the data reports at top of mind are retail sales (Tuesday), building permits/housing starts (Wednesday), and initial/continuing jobless claims (Thursday).
