Editor's Take
Here's the thing about Thule-most people know them for those roof racks you see on Subarus heading to ski resorts, but that's kind of like saying Apple just makes phones. They've been at this since 1942, which means they were figuring out how to haul gear before most of our grandparents were born.
Founded in 1942 in the deepest forest of Småland, Sweden, by Erik Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, Thule has focused on designing and developing quality products that help you carry your gear wherever your passion takes you. And honestly? That Swedish design sensibility shows. Everything they make has this clean, functional aesthetic that doesn't scream "look at me" but quietly works better than you'd expect.
What's interesting is how they've evolved beyond just car accessories. Sure, they're still crushing it with roof racks and bike carriers-they're global market leaders in roof racks, roof boxes and bike racks for cars, camera bags, and multisport and bicycle trailers-but walk into an REI and you'll find their backpacks, luggage, and even strollers. They've basically become the go-to brand for people who actually use their gear, not just Instagram it.
The testing thing is pretty wild. At the Thule Test Center, products are pushed to the extreme to ensure safety and durability, from desert heat to arctic cold, crash tests to UV exposure, with over 25 proprietary Thule standards. So when they say something can handle your ski trip or cross-country road trip, they've literally already tried to destroy it and failed.
But here's what really sets them apart-they're not trying to be the cheapest option. You'll pay more for Thule gear, but talk to anyone who's owned their stuff for years and they'll tell you it's still working. That's the Scandinavian approach: build it right once instead of replacing it three times. In a world of planned obsolescence, that's refreshing.
They've also got this whole sustainability angle going, which feels genuine rather than greenwashed. Thule wants to contribute to a more sustainable world through innovative, high-quality products, manufactured responsibly, that inspire people to live an active life outdoors. When a company's been around for 80+ years, they tend to think longer-term anyway.
The product range is massive now-roof tents, dog crates, bike trailers for kids, cargo boxes that hold 200cm skis. They've thought through basically every "how do I get this thing from point A to point B" problem you might have. And the modularity is smart; once you've got their base system on your car, you can swap between different carriers depending on whether it's bike season or ski season.
One thing that doesn't get talked about enough: their dealer network. They encourage shopping directly on thule.com or finding your local dealer, and those dealers actually know their stuff. When you're trying to figure out which rack fits your specific car model, that expertise matters.
Thule Group is a world-leading sports and outdoor company founded in 1942 that has grown and flourished, now selling safe, easy-to-use, and stylish products for active families and outdoor enthusiasts in 140 countries worldwide. That's not just marketing speak-you genuinely see their gear everywhere from Norway to New Zealand.
So yeah, Thule costs more upfront. But when you're strapping a thousand-dollar bike or your entire family's ski equipment to your car at 70mph, maybe that's not where you want to cheap out. They've spent decades earning that trust, one roof rack at a time.
