In the UK, they have a simple nutrition motto that's become part of everyday life: "5 a day." Five servings of fruits and vegetables every day - that's it. Simple, memorable and it works. Here in the US, we tend to talk about "eating the rainbow" instead. But how do you actually make it work?

This week, we're breaking down what those colorful fruits and vegetables do for your baby, spotlighting a meal that packs in multiple servings and taking a peek at what babies eat for breakfast around the world (it's not all oatmeal!).

MAKING SENSE OF 'EAT THE RAINBOW'

Practical tips:

1. Think in weeks, not meals - If Monday was all orange (sweet potato, carrots) and Tuesday is all green (peas and zucchini), that's actually great.

2. One new color per day is winning - If your baby ate something red yesterday and something purple today, you're doing it.

3. Repeat colors are totally fine - If your baby loves blueberries every day this week, lean into it. Eating ANY fruit or vegetable consistently is a win.

4. Hidden counts too - That tomato sauce on pasta? Red. That spinach blended into a meal? Green. If they can't see it but they're eating it, it counts.

5. White/tan foods are your friends - Oats, quinoa, potatoes and bananas are nutrient-dense, filling and well-accepted. Not flashy, but doing important work.

SPOTLIGHT: STRAWBERRY BANANA OATMEAL

This is one of those naturally sweet combinations that most babies love right away - and for good reason. Oats provide that sustained energy to get through the morning.

Parent tip: This is a great "gateway" meal if your baby is hesitant about new foods. The familiarity of strawberries and bananas makes it approachable, and once they love this, you can branch out to more complex flavor combinations like the Pineapple Coconut Oatmeal or our savory meals.

BABY BREAKFAST AROUND THE WORLD

What do babies eat for breakfast in different countries?

We thought it would be fun to look at what the most popular baby breakfast dishes are around the world. Turns out, American babies aren't the only ones starting their day with oatmeal!

🇯🇵 Japan: Rice porridge (okayu) with miso soup - Soft, easily digestible rice cooked until creamy, often with a bit of fish or egg mixed in. Simple, mild and savory.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Weetabix or porridge - Whole grain biscuits softened with milk, or traditional oat porridge. Very similar to what American babies eat!

🇮🇳 India: Khichdi (rice and lentil porridge) - A savory, spiced mix of rice and lentils with ghee. Introduces bold flavors early - turmeric, cumin and mild spices.

🇲🇽 Mexico: Papilla (fruit puree) - Often papaya, banana or mango blended smooth. Tropical, naturally sweet and easy to digest.

🇫🇷 France: Yogurt with fruit compote - Full-fat yogurt with stewed fruit (often apple or pear). French babies start with more complex textures earlier than American babies typically do.

🇺🇸 United States: Oatmeal, yogurt or scrambled eggs - We tend to rotate between sweet (oatmeal with fruit) and savory (eggs, avocado toast). Very flexible approach!

The common thread? Almost every culture starts with something soft, easily digestible and nutrient-dense. There's no "right" way - just what works for your family and your baby's taste preferences.
