So here's the thing about Todd Snyder - it's kind of become the go-to spot for guys who want to look sharp without trying too hard. And honestly? That's exactly what modern menswear should be.
The brand was founded in 2011 and has been called "the most influential menswear designer of his generation" by GQ. But what really sets Todd Snyder apart isn't just the accolades. It's this whole vibe of making classic American style feel, well, actually wearable. The menswear is inspired by Savile Row craftsmanship, military tailoring, and a distinct New York sensibility, with collaborations including Champion, New Balance, and Timex.
Here's what I find interesting - American Eagle Outfitters acquired the brand in 2015, and it now reports over $100 million in annual sales revenue. That's not just impressive numbers; it shows how Todd Snyder managed to scale up while keeping that premium, boutique feel intact. Notice how you can walk into one of their stores and it doesn't feel like a mall brand, even though technically it's owned by one?
The collaboration game is where things get really fun. In 2013 Todd Snyder launched a partnership with heritage sportswear brand Champion, and that basically changed how we think about elevated basics. Suddenly your hoodie could be both comfortable AND something you'd wear to a nice dinner. Todd Snyder was the first designer to do a collaboration with L.L. Bean, which tells you everything about his approach - take something classic, something your dad might've worn, and make it cool again.
The stores themselves are worth mentioning. They're described as one-stop shops for everything a stylish man could need, featuring not just clothing but also a barbershop, coffee cafe, Moscot eyewear, vintage watches curated by Hodinkee, and grooming products from Aesop. It's basically like if your coolest friend opened a store and filled it with all his favorite things.
And the tailoring? That's where Todd Snyder really shines. They offer Made to Measure services, where expert tailors work with you to create garments with the perfect fit and look for your unique style. But even their off-the-rack stuff has that tailored sensibility - nothing feels sloppy or oversized just for the sake of being trendy.
What I appreciate most is the range. You've got everything from classic Favorite Shirts and premium Denim to sweatpants, joggers and hoodies in their Luxe Sport Collection. So whether you're suiting up for a wedding or just trying to look decent on a Zoom call, there's something that works.
The brand recently made waves by returning to the runway in January 2024 at Pitti Uomo in Florence, where the New York Times described Todd Snyder as "the righteous inheritor of Ralph Lauren's mantle." That's high praise, but honestly? It tracks. There's this same sense of aspirational American style, just updated for guys who maybe don't want to look like they're about to play polo.
