So here's the thing about Tommy Bahama - it's basically what happens when a couple of guys lounging on a Florida beach in the early '90s decide to turn "never leaving vacation" into an actual business model. And honestly? They kind of nailed it.
Founded in 1993, the brand started with silk camp shirts - not the flimsy $10 kind you'd find at a tourist trap, but heavy, quality silk that actually felt luxurious. That gamble paid off big time. What began as upscale menswear quickly morphed into this whole lifestyle thing: men's and women's sportswear, activewear, denim, swimwear, accessories, footwear, and even a complete home furnishings collection. They've got over 160 company-owned stores worldwide, and here's where it gets interesting - 14 of those locations include a Tommy Bahama restaurant and bar.
The restaurant thing? Total accident. Back in 1995, they needed a store in Naples, Florida. The landlord offered them 10,000 square feet when they only needed 2,000. Instead of walking away, they impulsively decided to open a restaurant in the extra space. No prior experience, just vibes. Now those food and beverage locations pull in over $100 million annually.
In 2003, Tommy Bahama became fully owned by Oxford Industries, Inc., which gave them the backing to really expand. They're not just selling clothes anymore - they've licensed everything from eyewear to luggage to actual rum (yes, really - they launched their own brand in 2007). The corporate headquarters sits at 400 Fairview in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, in a building that opened in 2015.
What's kind of fascinating is how they've maintained this "island life" concept for over 30 years without it feeling forced. You can find their stuff at Nordstrom, Macy's, Dillard's, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue, plus they ship to over 100 countries. The brand works because it taps into something universal - that feeling you get on the last day of vacation when you're desperately trying to hold onto the relaxation before real life kicks back in. Tommy Bahama basically says, "What if you didn't have to let go?"
