Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Torrid-it's basically the fashion industry finally waking up and realizing that style doesn't stop at size 10. Founded back in 2001, this wasn't just another plus-size retailer trying to squeeze curvy women into whatever was left over from the straight-size lines. Nope. Torrid flipped the script entirely.

The company started with a radical idea: instead of expecting bodies to change for clothes, why not change clothes to fit bodies? Sounds obvious now, but back then? Revolutionary. They launched their first store in the Brea Mall in California, and it was like someone finally turned on the lights for women sizes 10 to 30 who were tired of shopping in the back corner of department stores or settling for frumpy, outdated styles.

What makes Torrid different is their obsession with fit. And I mean obsession. They've spent over two decades breaking design rules and perfecting their patterns. Their jeans, for instance, have become legendary in the plus-size community-the kind of thing people write entire blog posts about. The brand offers everything from everyday basics to intimates, activewear, swimwear, and accessories, all designed with curves in mind from the ground up.

But Torrid isn't just about clothes. It's become a cultural touchstone for a generation of women who grew up feeling invisible in mainstream fashion. The brand leans hard into fan culture too, with collections inspired by everything from Doctor Who to Star Wars. They get that their customers aren't just looking for clothes-they're looking for self-expression.

Today, Torrid operates over 600 stores across the US and Canada, plus a robust e-commerce platform. They went public on the NYSE in 2021 under the ticker CURV (clever, right?). The company generates over a billion dollars in annual revenue, which tells you everything about the massive market that mainstream fashion ignored for way too long.

Their Torrid Rewards program keeps customers coming back, and their casting calls for models have become major events in the plus-size community. The brand has consistently championed body positivity and inclusivity, not as a marketing gimmick, but as their core DNA. When you walk into a Torrid store or browse their website, everything is designed for you-not adapted, not modified, but actually designed with your body in mind.

The fashion industry has a long way to go, but Torrid proved there's a massive, underserved market hungry for stylish, well-fitting clothes. And they're not slowing down anytime soon.
