Editor's Take
Tortuga Music Festival is what happens when you take the best parts of a country music festival and drop them onto one of Florida's most beautiful beaches. Founded by A.J. Niland and Chris Stacey, this annual spring festival aimed to raise awareness and support for ocean conservation, and as of 2019 over $1,200,000 has been raised for ocean conservation. But honestly? The conservation angle is just part of what makes this thing special.
Tortuga is a 3-day, multi-stage music festival featuring some of the biggest names in country, rock and roots music, held on the white sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach Park in a beautiful oceanside setting. And when they say "on the beach," they mean literally on the beach. The festival takes place at 1100 Seabreeze Boulevard, from approximately 12 to 10:30 p.m. daily, with a portion of the beach designated for the festival and not available for public use during the event.
The lineup reads like a who's who of country and rock. Recent years have featured headliners like Luke Combs, Keith Urban, Jelly Roll, and Ludacris, with the festival showcasing both established stars and rising artists. Past performers have included Zac Brown Band, Brett Eldredge, Eric Church, David Nail, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shania Twain, and Kenny Chesney as headliners. The diversity is actually pretty impressive - you'll catch everything from traditional country to rock to roots music, all with the Atlantic Ocean as your backdrop.
But here's what really sets Tortuga apart: the conservation mission isn't just marketing fluff. Each year, the festival features an area known as Conservation Village, which holds interactive booths that contain games, exhibitions and displays with the focus of raising awareness of issues impacting the world's oceans. Over $4,000,000 has been given back to our Conservation Village partners as a direct result of ticket sales and donations from the festival.
Thanks to sustainability and recycling programs at Tortuga 2024, fans helped us divert 114.7 tons of materials from the landfill - that's over an 80% waste diversion rate. They're serious about this stuff, even applying for special permits during sea turtle nesting season to protect the local wildlife.
The festival experience itself is pretty well thought out. They have 3 stages of back to back music all weekend long - Main Stage, Sunset Stage and Next From Nashville Stage. And unlike some beach festivals that feel chaotic, Tortuga seems to have figured out the logistics. They offer water taxi passes to skip traffic, lockers for storage, and even free reef-safe sunscreen stations.
Pass options range from General Admission to SVIP, with Captain's Cabanas available for groups who want the full VIP experience - including a private air-conditioned dining room, dedicated bartender, and front-row view of the Main and Sunset stages. Not cheap, but if you're doing a beach music festival, might as well do it right.
The whole thing feels like someone took the best parts of a traditional music festival and figured out how to make it work on a beach without losing the magic. Plus, you're supporting ocean conservation while you're at it - which honestly makes the whole experience feel a bit more meaningful than your average festival weekend.
