Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Tracksmith-it's not really about the gear. I mean, yeah, they make running clothes, but that's kind of like saying a great restaurant just serves food.
Tracksmith is an independent running company that celebrates the competitive spirit, built on a deep love for the sport, crafting performance running apparel, inspiring publications and distinct experiences. But what makes them different is they actually get runners. Not the "I jog sometimes" crowd-the people who wake up at 5 AM for a tempo run, who know their splits, who've cried at the finish line of a marathon.
Founded in 2014, Tracksmith emerged from a frustration with how big running brands had watered everything down, chasing the athleisure market instead of serving actual runners. And honestly? That focus shows. They honor the Amateur Spirit upon which the sport was founded and champion the Running Class - the non-professional yet competitive runners dedicated to the pursuit of personal excellence. It's this weird sweet spot between elite and everyday that nobody else was really serving.
Their flagship store in Boston-they call it the Trackhouse-sits at 285 Newbury Street in Boston's historic Back Bay. But it's not just a store. They host weekly group runs, events and more, with runners able to store their gear in a locker before a run, catch up in their library or wait for an appointment with Wellness in Motion. The second floor is inspired by the legendary Eliot Lounge, a runner's bar that closed in 1996 but lives on in Boston running lore.
They've since expanded to Brooklyn (a 1,500-square-foot store on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg) and London (in the heart of Marylebone at 25 Chiltern Street). Each location doubles as a community hub, which is very much the point.
The aesthetic is distinctly collegiate-think vintage track meets, burgundy and forest green, the kind of colors you'd find on a 1970s Harvard sweatshirt. It's preppy without being precious, performance-focused without looking like a tech billboard. They leverage Merino Wool to craft technical running apparel, incorporating advanced fabric technology and premium craftsmanship, which basically means their stuff works but doesn't scream "MOISTURE-WICKING TECHNOLOGY" at you.
And they've built this whole content ecosystem around running culture. There's Meter, their quarterly magazine with zero overt ads. There's a YouTube channel with beautifully shot films about the sport. There's a blog called "Stories that inform." They're not just selling singlets-they're celebrating the weird, wonderful culture of distance running.
The brand did catch some heat in 2024 for a social media post about a Boston Marathon singlet that was only available to qualifiers. People called it elitist. They deleted the post. But here's the thing-Tracksmith has always been a bit exclusive, in the sense that they're unapologetically for serious runners. Not everyone gets it, and that's okay. Actually, that's kind of the point.
Prices aren't cheap-this is premium gear-but the quality is there. And unlike a lot of DTC brands that feel soulless, Tracksmith has this authenticity that's hard to fake. Maybe it's because their office and flagship retail store are located at 285 Newbury Street, and they host group workouts for all ability levels on Wednesdays, as well as long runs every Sunday, followed by recovery snacks and beverages on the roof deck. They're actually part of the running community they serve.
Whether you're training for Boston or just trying to break 20 minutes in a 5K, Tracksmith gets what makes running special. It's not about the gear-but the gear sure doesn't hurt.
