Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Travelpro-it's not just another luggage brand trying to sell you overpriced suitcases. This company was literally invented by a commercial airline pilot back in 1987 who got tired of lugging around heavy bags. Bob Plath basically looked at his crew dragging their stuff through airports and thought, "There's gotta be a better way." And boom-the Original Rollaboard was born.

What's kind of wild is that Travelpro didn't start as some massive corporate venture. It began with flight crews passing bags between themselves, like some underground luggage network. Now it's the go-to brand for over 90 airlines worldwide. Flight attendants-people who literally live out of suitcases-choose this stuff. That tells you something.

The Platinum Elite 21" Expandable Carry-On Spinner? Wirecutter ranked it the best carry-on for seven years straight. Seven years. That's not a fluke. Forbes and CBS News have also called out their softside luggage as market-leading. But here's what really matters: they back it up with a 100-day trial period. You can actually use the luggage, travel with it, and if it doesn't work out, they'll refund you and cover return shipping. Most companies won't do that because, well, they know their products might not hold up.

The durability thing isn't marketing speak either. These bags go through more than 15 rigorous assessments before they hit shelves. They've got features like the PrecisionGlide system for smooth rolling, built-in organizational compartments, and materials designed to flex on impact rather than crack. It's the kind of engineering you'd expect from a brand that's been obsessing over luggage for 35+ years.

And they're not resting on their laurels. The new VersaPack collection launched in 2024 with removable packing cubes, compression systems, and compartments for wet or dry items-basically everything you wish your current suitcase had. Prices range from $169 to $449, which isn't cheap, but it's also not luxury-brand ridiculous.

One more thing: they actually stand behind their warranty. The Built For a Lifetime Limited Warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, and while some customers have complained about customer service (what company doesn't have those reviews?), the fact remains that this is luggage designed by people who understand what frequent travelers actually need. Not what looks good in a showroom, but what survives the chaos of real travel.
