Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Trina Turk-it's basically what happens when California sunshine decides to become a fashion brand. And I mean that in the best possible way.

Founded in 1995 by Trina and her late husband, photographer Jonathan Skow, this isn't just another clothing line churning out safe basics. It's a full-blown lifestyle brand that somehow captures that effortless Palm Springs glamour without feeling like it's trying too hard. You know that friend who always looks put-together but swears they just threw something on? That's the vibe.

The prints are bold-like, really bold. We're talking vibrant colors and patterns that would make a wallflower nervous but make everyone else feel like they're perpetually on vacation. The brand melds the best of classic American design with California confidence, incorporating beautiful fabrications and impeccable quality. It's not just about looking good; these pieces actually feel luxurious.

What's interesting is how the brand has expanded beyond just women's wear. The collection now includes swimwear, eyewear, paper goods, a Mr Turk menswear collection, and residential goods. So yeah, you can literally dress yourself, your husband, and your living room in coordinating mid-century modern prints. Some people might call that extra. I call it commitment to aesthetic.

The first retail store opened in Palm Springs in 2002 and has since expanded to boutiques in Atlanta, Dallas, Naples, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and Burlingame. The Palm Springs flagship is particularly special-housed in a 1960s Albert Frey building, it's basically a pilgrimage site for anyone who loves that retro California cool.

But here's what really sets Trina Turk apart: it's wearable. Despite all the bold prints and vibrant colors, these aren't costume pieces. You can wear a Trina Turk dress to a wedding, to work, or just because it's Tuesday and you want to feel like you're sipping cocktails poolside even if you're actually in a Zoom meeting. The silhouettes are flattering, the quality is there, and the pieces tend to become wardrobe staples rather than one-season wonders.

The price point sits firmly in contemporary designer territory-not fast fashion, but not mortgage-your-house either. You're paying for quality fabrication, unique prints, and designs that won't look dated next year. Plus, with 11 collections released annually, there's always something new if you're the type who gets bored easily.

And can we talk about the swimwear for a second? It's actually good. Like, supportive-and-flattering-and-doesn't-fall-apart-after-two-wears good. Which is rarer than you'd think in the designer swimwear world.

The brand has this interesting thing where it appeals to multiple generations. You'll see twenty-somethings and sixty-somethings shopping side by side, which tells you something about the versatility of the designs. It's not trying to be young or mature-it's just trying to be stylish and optimistic.

If you're into mid-century modern design, California architecture, or just really love color, Trina Turk is worth checking out. Even if bold prints aren't usually your thing, the brand does enough solid-color pieces and classic silhouettes that you can ease in. But honestly? Life's too short for boring clothes. Sometimes you need a dress covered in geometric flowers that makes you feel like you're living in a 1960s Palm Springs postcard.
