Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Ulysse Nardin - it's basically the watch brand that refuses to play by anyone's rules, and honestly? That's kind of their whole vibe.

Founded in 1846 in Le Locle, Switzerland, this isn't your typical stuffy Swiss watchmaker churning out the same designs year after year. Sure, they started with marine chronometers (and got ridiculously good at them - winning 4324 certificates, 2411 special prizes and 18 gold medals at International exhibitions), but that was just the beginning. The real story starts when you look at what they've been doing lately.

Take the Freak collection. In 2001, the Freak caused a stir as one of the first watches with silicon components. Its design lacks a dial, crown, and hands. The movement itself displays the time, while the case back is used to wind the watch, and the time is set via the bezel. Like, imagine telling a traditional Swiss watchmaker you're making a watch with no hands. They'd probably have a heart attack. But Ulysse Nardin just went ahead and did it anyway, and more than 20 years later, the Freak [ONE] was awarded the "Most Iconic Watch" prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.

And they're not just about being weird for the sake of it. Ulysse Nardin has led innovation in chronometry, in-house movements, and material R&D, accumulating over 4,300 technical and design awards. That's a lot of hardware for a company that basically said "what if we just... didn't follow the rules?"

What's interesting is how they've managed to stay relevant. In 2022, Kering sold Ulysse Nardin to its management team, led by CEO Patrick Pruniaux, restoring the brand's independence. So they're back to being independent, which feels right for a brand that's always done its own thing. They've got four main collections now - Freak, Blast, Diver, and Marine - each with its own personality but all sharing that same "we're going to do something unexpected" energy.

The marine connection is still there, by the way. The company became known for manufacturing highly accurate marine chronometers and complicated precision exclusive timepieces used by over 50 of the world's navies from the end of the 19th century till 1950. Notice how they supplied navies from multiple countries? That's not just good marketing - that's actual precision engineering that people trusted with their lives at sea.

But here's what really sets them apart: they're one of the few truly integrated manufactures. The company has an integrated production system. The majority of the work is done in-house, from conception, design, development and crafting through to production. The brand produces its own high-precision components, movements and calibers. In an industry where a lot of brands outsource parts, Ulysse Nardin is basically saying "nah, we'll make it ourselves, thanks."

And they're committed to quality in a way that's kind of refreshing. Ulysse Nardin offers an extended 5-year warranty on all newly-purchased watches. Most brands give you two years and call it a day. Five years? That's confidence.

The watches aren't cheap - this is haute horlogerie we're talking about - but if you're into watches that make people stop and ask "wait, how does that even work?", Ulysse Nardin delivers. They're for people who want something that stands out, something with actual innovation behind it, not just another variation on the same theme everyone else is doing. Kind of like that friend who always takes the scenic route because the highway is boring.
