Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Universal Orlando Resort-it's kind of become this massive entertainment complex that's way more than just a couple of theme parks anymore. You've got Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, which have been around for years, plus Volcano Bay water park, and now Epic Universe just opened in May 2025, making it a legitimate week-long vacation destination. That's a pretty big deal when you think about it.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is obviously the headliner here. They've got Diagon Alley in one park, Hogsmeade in another, and you can actually ride the Hogwarts Express between them-but only if you spring for the park-to-park ticket. It's a clever setup, honestly. And speaking of rides, Universal's been on this roller coaster kick lately. VelociCoaster gets all the hype (and yeah, it's intense), but you've also got Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which regularly has wait times pushing two hours during peak season.
Epic Universe is the new kid on the block with five themed worlds, including Super Nintendo World and a Ministry of Magic area. According to Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Epic Universe operates from 9am to 9pm daily for its initial opening period. The resort now spans four theme parks total, which puts it in serious competition with that other Orlando destination.
But here's what's interesting-Universal's got this different vibe than Disney. It skews a bit older, leans heavier into thrill rides, and their social media team is notorious for throwing shade (seriously, check out their Twitter). Operating hours are seasonal, and during peak visiting periods, such as holidays and summertime, the parks are open later. Halloween Horror Nights is their marquee event, running from Labor Day weekend through Halloween, and it's become this huge draw for horror fans.
The resort employs thousands of people-they call them Team Members-and they're constantly hiring for everything from ride operators to culinary positions. Universal offers programs like Act Two for career returners, providing skills development and professional support, recognizing that while careers may pause, talent and drive do not.
One thing that catches people off guard is the Express Pass system. Unlike Disney's complicated Lightning Lane setup, Universal's is straightforward but pricey-sometimes more than the ticket itself. Though honestly, on a crowded summer day, it might be worth it. The parks typically open around 9 AM, but Universal Orlando Hotel guests and other select groups can access one of the theme parks prior to park scheduled opening time, which is a nice perk if you're staying on property.
CityWalk is their dining and entertainment district, and it's free to access (no park ticket needed). You've got everything from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium to Voodoo Doughnut, plus live music venues. It's basically where everyone ends up after the parks close.
The resort's owned by NBCUniversal (which is Comcast), and they've been dumping serious money into expansions. That Epic Universe park? Reportedly cost billions. They're clearly playing the long game here, trying to keep visitors in Orlando for longer stays. And with eight on-site hotels now, plus more in development, they're building the infrastructure to make that happen.
