Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Used Photo Pro-it's basically what happens when a family-owned camera shop decides to go all-in on the used gear market, and honestly? They kind of nailed it.

The story starts back in 1957 when Robert and Rose Pallman opened Roberts Distributors in downtown Indianapolis. Fast forward to 2012, and their granddaughter Meredith and her husband Corey launched UsedPhotoPro as a new division-and that's when things got interesting. They've quickly become one of the largest places to buy, sell and trade quality pre-loved camera equipment in the world. Not just the country. The world.

What makes them different? Well, for starters, they photograph the actual item you're buying. Not stock photos-the real deal, scratches and all. They've got over 60 years of experience, which means they've seen pretty much every camera issue imaginable. And their warranty? A 180 day (that's 6 whole months!) warranty on used equipment. Most places give you 30 days if you're lucky.

The business model is pretty straightforward-they accept most brands of photographic equipment for trade, and you can either get cash or use the credit toward new or used gear. They offer free shipping, which is huge when you're dealing with camera equipment that can run into the thousands. They've also partnered with Affirm for financing, because let's be real, photography gear isn't cheap even when it's used.

But here's what really stands out: In a world dominated by automation, they don't want to lose sight of the fact that they are human-they are a voice on the end of the phone and a welcoming face when customers enter their stores. That's not marketing speak. Their downtown Indianapolis location is an actual retail store where you can walk in, handle the gear, and talk to people who genuinely know their stuff.

The grading system is transparent-items are rated from Poor to Excellent based on condition percentage, and they're upfront about cosmetic issues. They offer a 14-day Hassle Free Return Policy, and if you want to return your purchase within fourteen days of receiving it, you just contact their customer service department for a return authorization. No games, no runaround.

And the selection? It's massive. Everything from vintage film cameras to the latest mirrorless bodies, lenses across every mount imaginable, lighting equipment, bags, tripods-basically if it's photography-related and someone's traded it in, there's a good chance it's on their site. They even sell on eBay under the Roberts Camera name, where they've got a 99.6% positive feedback rating from over 720,000 items sold.

One thing worth noting: they're closed on major holidays and Sundays, and their Saturday hours are shorter. So if you're planning a store visit, check ahead. But their website? Always open, always updating with new gear as it comes in.
