Editor's Take

Here's the thing about Utah Ski Gear - it's basically the anti-big-box-store of the ski world, and that's kind of the whole point. Started back in 2011 when co-owner Esther asked her husband Travis to clear out extra skis from their garage, they lined up 17 pairs in front of their Subaru during the first snowfall, snapped a pic, listed them on Craigslist, and boom - they sold quickly. That first winter, they ended up selling 50 pairs of skis out of their rented townhouse, and Utah Ski Gear was born.

What makes this place different? Well, for starters, they're a local mom-and-pop ski shop that offers rentals, new and used gear, and tuning services at some of the best prices in the valley. And they mean it when they say "best prices" - we're talking season rental packages starting at $99 for kids and daily rentals from $19 for children and $29 for adults. But it's not just about being cheap. They're committed to making skiing affordable and enjoyable for everyone, with an extensive range of new and used gear, the largest selection of tuning supplies in Utah, and friendly and helpful customer service.

They've got two locations now - the original Sandy retail shop at 600 E 9400 S (just 15 minutes from both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon) and a Midvale Performance Center that opened in 2021. The Performance Center is home to the largest selection of ski tuning supplies in Utah, which is basically heaven if you're the type who likes to tune your own gear. They stock brands like Swix, Toko, Wintersteiger, and more - all the good stuff.

Notice how they've carved out this niche between "I need gear but can't afford resort prices" and "I want quality, not junk." They carry new high-performance skis and snowboards from brands like Elan, Fischer, Nordica, Stockli, DC, and Salomon, plus closeout skis from Elan, Head, Faction, Fischer, K2, Kastle, and Rossignol. So you're getting real brands, just at prices that won't make you wince.

The demo program is pretty clever too. You can try top-brand skis for as low as $40/day, and if you decide to purchase, you can count up to 3 days of demo fees toward the purchase - a savings of up to $150. It's like test-driving a car, but for skis. And honestly, that makes way more sense than dropping hundreds on skis you've never tried.

Established in 2011, they've been doing this for over a decade now, and they were voted Best Ski Shop in Salt Lake 2021/22. The reviews tell the story - people rave about the personalized service, the knowledge, the prices. One Yelp reviewer said they got "the king's treatment" and that six stars would've been more appropriate. That's the kind of place this is.
