Vermont’s mountains and valleys are winter playgrounds. Whether you and the winter season are old friends or you’re just getting to know your way around, there are so many ways to enjoy times in the snow.
In the Upper Connecticut River Valley region, take to the country’s longest skating trail. At just over four miles in length, the Lake Morey Skate Trail’s path traces the edge of the lake; a dozen maintained rink areas beckon the hockey set. Skate rentals are available at the Lake Morey Resort, right on the trail’s edge, where you’ll also find your well-earned reward: hot chocolate.
You don’t have to ski or ride to enjoy winter in Vermont, but should you choose to, the White River Valley’s Middlebury Snow Bowl makes for a community-grounded and family-friendly option. College champions and Olympians alike have cut their paths on the Bowl’s trails and glades, and professional instructors are ready to bring you into the shredding fold.
Winter can be restorative. Retreat inward in Northwest Vermont at the Montgomery Salt Cave, a halotherapy experience in a restored barn. Salt boulders and crystals create the Green Mountain version of Poland’s traditional salt caves, said to have therapeutic properties.
