Editor's Take

You know that feeling when you're stuck in a gray cubicle, staring at spreadsheets, and daydreaming about literally anywhere else? That's exactly where brothers Shep and Ian Murray were in 1998. Except they actually did something about it-they quit their corporate jobs, maxed out every credit card they could get their hands on, and started selling neckties out of a backpack on Martha's Vineyard. Kind of insane when you think about it, but also kind of brilliant.

The whole thing started with ties. Just four styles, actually. But then they sold 800 of them in a single weekend, and suddenly this wasn't just a beach hustle anymore. Fast forward to today, and Vineyard Vines has become this massive preppy empire with over 100 stores across the country. You've definitely seen their logo-that smiling pink whale that's basically everywhere now, from college campuses to country clubs.

What's interesting is how they've managed to bottle up this very specific vibe. It's coastal New England meets laid-back summer, with a dash of "I summer on the Vineyard" thrown in. The clothes are unapologetically preppy-think whimsical ties, bright polos, and those shorts covered in tiny whales or lobsters. Some people love it, some people think it's too much, but you can't deny they've carved out their own lane.

The company's philosophy is built around this idea that "every day should feel this good"-abbreviated as EDSFTG if you're in the know. It's not just marketing speak either. They actually seem to run the business this way, encouraging employees to take risks and wear multiple hats. Notice how they still talk about "living the good life" in basically everything they do? That's the whole brand in a nutshell.

Here's something most people don't realize: Vineyard Vines was valued at one billion dollars by Goldman Sachs back in 2016, when they were pulling in $476 million in sales. Not bad for two guys who started by selling ties from a Jeep. They've expanded way beyond neckwear now-you can get everything from kids' clothes to licensed NFL and MLB gear. They even did a limited-edition collection with Target that sold out in like an hour, which caused a bit of chaos.

The brand has grown up a lot since those early Martha's Vineyard days. They've got a fancy headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, they're sold in major department stores like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's, and they've built this whole retail empire. But they're still privately held, still run by the Murray brothers, and still pushing that same carefree, nautical aesthetic that started it all.

Whether you're into the preppy look or not, you've gotta respect the hustle. Two brothers turned a crazy idea into a lifestyle brand that's become synonymous with a certain slice of American culture. And they did it by staying true to their original vision-even when that vision involved selling ties with whales on them.
