Parks, trails and the joy of summer recreation (kilts optional)
Hi — I’m Lily Hauser, NC State student and descendant of the very first Hauser to settle in the US (we still visit his grave in Old Salem). Raleigh's always been home, but every summer I carve out time for a week in the mountains and a week on the coast. Out west, you'll find me at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games (I've competed in Scottish dancing six times!), and it’s always a highlight. Out east, it’s a beach trip with my best friends — a newer tradition, but one I hope sticks.
When I’m not dancing, I’m on the move: hiking, kayaking and canoeing in national forests, local lakes and state parks. And in honor of the 40th anniversary of Parks and Rec Month, I’m sharing some of the spots — and the post-hike ice cream stops — that keep me coming back.
2 days, 2 ways: Pick your outdoor path in Graham County
Adventure looks different for everyone — and in this corner of NC’s Great Smoky Mountains, that’s exactly the point. This two-day journey offers two ways to explore: high-adrenaline or low-key. Either way, it’s a win.
Tucked in the western corner of NC’s mountains, Cherokee County delivers a refreshing, relaxed take on recreation. Cruise the waters of Lake Hiwassee — an exceptionally scenic mountain gem stretching 22 miles and surrounded by Nantahala National Forest — or roll through Andrews Valley on NC’s first railbike tour. Then swap stories around a campfire after a hike on Piney Knob’s wooded trails or float down the Valley River.
Showing love for the coast, one small impact at a time
Every beach trip is a chance to show care for the coastal spaces we love. That means trashing our trash, bringing the essentials — and taking them home again. One small way to cut down on what needs tossing? Bring your own cup. As part of the Outdoor NC movement, Pirani Life is helping show how small choices, like embracing reusable cups, can help us leave the coast better than we found it.
