Hi, I’m Dana, Visit NC’s Content Marketing Manager and your go-to for micro-adventures across the state. As summer winds down, my 5-year-old and I are squeezing in every bit of fun we can. Yes, we’re already eyeing Halloween decor and counting down to new episodes of Visit NC’s First in Fright podcast (four bonus ones are coming!), but we’re still chasing sunshine with train rides, baseball games and bite-sized adventures close to home.
Lately, we’ve been riding NC By Train to catch Minor League Baseball games across the state — no long drives, just smooth tracks, stadium snacks and stress-free fun. It’s been the perfect way to savor the tail end of summer while easing into fall, one railcar, ballpark and game of Mascot Mayhem at a time.
Along NC’s southern coast near Sneads Ferry, oyster tours whisk you out to the farm, where you’ll learn the ropes and slurp the day’s harvest — sometimes right from a floating table. And this time of year, you can even dig your own clams for a hands-on, salt-sprayed outing. Want the flavor without the labor? The area’s restaurants have you covered, dishing out water views, international flavors and refreshing drinks.
Summer’s winding down, but the adventures are still peaking in Beech Mountain. Cruise up to the highest town in the East for breezy hikes, mile-high concerts, mountaintop biking and leaf-peeping views that stretch for miles. Bonus points if you stumble into one of the season’s most unexpectedly charming festivals.
Longer days will soon give way to changing leaves, and while we love fall, we also want to squeeze every bit of joy out of these last days of summer. Fortunately, NC has warm‑weather adventures in spades, like hiking to the summit of Waterrock Knob along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Haywood County for breathtaking mountain panoramas. The best way to kiss summer goodbye? Be considerate of others on the trail. Keep noise low, share viewpoints and yield the way so everyone can soak in the beauty as summer fades into fall.
