Putting Some Spring in Your Step

It’s April! And that means it’s time to play ball! The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders home opener is set for April 8 at PNC Field in Moosic and everyone here at Visit Luzerne County is excited about the season. It’s always a great time at the ballpark, where you can see the top prospects of the New York Yankees and enjoy the team’s fun promotions. We’ll be sponsoring 12 on-field promotions at PNC Field this year and we’ll be at the ballpark with an info booth on June 12. Best of luck, RailRiders!

As always, the beautiful F.M. Kirby Center in downtown Wilkes-Barre has a full slate of shows this month, including The Peking Acrobats on April 2. The dazzling show features trick-cycling, precision tumbling, juggling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. The acrobats are known to push the very limits of human ability, defying gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility, and control. On April 5, Philadelphia Freedom will bring the timeless pop hits of Elton John to The Kirby, and on April 11, A Proud Monkey will serve up the explosive rock of the Dave Matthews Band.

Do you love rock and roll? On April 19, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joan Jett will blast The Kirby (Visit Luzerne County is the sponsor of the show), and on April 25, the iconic sounds of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic will fill The Kirby as it presents Carmina Burana. On April 27, you can journey to the dark side of the moon at The Kirby with Brit Floyd, and on April 28, Dance of Hope comes to the theater. The youth-based, cross-cultural touring program and ensemble from Uganda is celebrated as one of Africa’s most impactful arts education initiatives, delving into the transformative power of music, dance and story sharing. On April 30, the age-old question of “Beatles of Stones?” will be played out live on stage with the Beatles vs. Stones show, featuring stellar tribute acts to both legendary British bands.

Mohegan Arena will also be bustling with activity in April when the renowned Cirque du Soleil: OVO comes to town on April 3, 4, and 5. Cirque du Soleil OVO is a vibrant, insect-themed production that plunges audiences into a world of energy and movement, showcasing acrobatics, unique costumes, and original music. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are home and on the ice at the arena on April 11, 12, 16 and 18, and - for the game on the 12th -the team will change its name to the Carbondale UFOs in honor of one of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s greatest urban legends. There will be special Carbondale UFOs jerseys and other spacey memorabilia on sale at the game. On April 26, rock/country star Brantley Gilbert will rock the arena. Gilbert has scored 14 country hits, four that reached #1.

Like accordions? Who doesn’t? The Pennsylvania Polka Fest comes to Mohegan Pennsylvania (the casino) on April 5. Performing will be legendary 18-time Grammy Award-winner and Polka King, Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra. And the kids can do their best bunny hops on April 12 when the Downtown Wilkes-Barre Business Association, the City of Wilkes-Barre, and the Diamond City Partnership present their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Public Square. On April 26 and 27, the City of Wilkes-Barre will host its annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Kirby Park. There will be food and crafts vendors and, hopefully, lots of pink on the trees.

On April 13, A Celebration of Life and tribute show to the late Bill Kelly will be held at Genetti’s in Wilkes-Barre. Kelly was the founder of The Buoys and co-founder of Dakota, two of the most successful bands to ever come from Northeastern Pennsylvania. (The Buoys “Timothy” hit the national Top-20 and Dakota toured with Queen.) The show will feature some great local bands as well as a performance by many of the surviving members of The Buoys.

To those that celebrate and observe, we would like to wish you all a very Happy Easter and Passover. And we hope to see you here in Luzerne County this month.

Alan, Sarah, Kyle, Gaye, and David
