Let The Gourd Times Roll!

Though the days are a bit shorter and the nights a bit cooler, for many, October is the best time of year here in Luzerne County! Fall foliage is a sight to behold, and whether you chose to enjoy it while hiking on a nature trail or on a countryside drive, it is truly spectacular. For some suggestions of how to better enjoy it, you can visit the fall foliage section of our website.

Events? There are also plenty of those happening this month …

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will hit the ice on October 3 for the team’s home opener at Mohegan Arena. Other home games this month are October 6, 12, 18 and 26. Good luck Pens! Also at the arena in October is a big homecoming show for Motionless In White, a band with local roots that has built a sizeable national audience. They’ll plug in on October 31 and November 1.

The F.M. Kirby Center has 10 events on tap this month, including one for Swifties on October 10, when the TayTay Dance Party, featuring DJ Swiftie, will fill the theater with the music of the iconic Taylor Swift. Local favorites Tigers Jaw will perform at The Kirby on October 11 and America will ride into town on a “horse with no name” on October 19.

A Greek Food Festival will be held October 2-4 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre and the Osterhout Free Library will host its 15th annual Brewsterhout Rooftop Party on October 4 at the Intermodal Parking Garage, which overlooks downtown Wilkes-Barre. On October 5 and 6, at The Lands at Hillside Farms in Shavertown, you can experience “Living History” with the 24th Connecticut Militia Regiment. The event aims to bring the Revolutionary War era to life in one of Luzerne County’s most picturesque settings.

On October 12, Visit Luzerne County and the City of Wilkes-Barre will host the inaugural Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby, at Kirby Park. The event will be held near the exact spot where, in 1926, Babe Ruth hit a 650-ft. home run, which some say is the longest recorded home run in baseball history. All proceeds benefit the Geisinger Children’s Miracle Network/Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, which we know The Babe would have liked.

On October 4-6, Abide Coffeehouse presents its second annual Back To The Grind event in downtown Wilkes-Barre, which will feature live music, games, vendors, prizes, and a city-wide scavenger hunt. On October 6, 11, 12, 13, The Pennsylvania Theatre of Performing Arts in Hazleton will present "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” which tells the story of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songwriter and includes her classic songs. Up for more timeless music? Rock Royalty, which performs the music of some of rock’s all-time greatest artists, will perform at the Valley Country Club in Sugarloaf on October 19. And if you need some laughs, the great Howie Mandel brings his legendary stand-up act to Mohegan Pennsylvania on October 18.

And we did not forget about Halloween!

The Luzerne County Historical Society will host its annual Downtown Wilkes-Barre Ghost Walks on October 18 and 19, where partakers can learn all about some of Wilkes-Barre’s haunted past. Wilkes-Scarre will host several events throughout downtown Wilkes-Barre during Halloween week, and on Halloween night, Mohegan Pennsylvania will host a Haunt at The Hive Halloween costume party that will include prizes for the “Scariest” and “Most Original” costumes, as well as best costume for a “Couple or Group.”

Trick or Treat! And Happy October!

Alan, Sarah, Kyle, Gaye, and David
