| On September 11 at 8:30 a.m., a Ceremony of Remembrance will be held on the South Lawn of the Luzerne County Courthouse in Wilkes-Barre to observe the events of September 11, 2001. We will never forget. On September 12, the Riverfront Parks Committee will present a free public screening of “Agnes,” a documentary film that chronicles the Agnes Flood of 1972 and its impact on the Wyoming Valley. The screening will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Millennium Circle at River Common in Wilkes-Barre and will give viewers the unique opportunity to see the documentary at the exact location where some of the events depicted in the film actually occurred 52 years ago. It will be the only public showing of the film this year. The F.M. Kirby Center - after being closed throughout the summer for renovations - reopens this month with a full plate of big shows, including Cancelled Podcast: Cross Country on September 18, rock/pop icon Chubby Checker on September 21, Terry Lee Goffee’s tribute to Johnny Cash on September 22, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic performing the music of Queen on September 27, and the award-winning, chart-topping country duo Maddie & Tae on September 29. Welcome back, F.M. Kirby Center! On September 21, Breaker Brewing Company in Wilkes-Barre Township will present Oktoberfest 2024. The event will be held outside, under a big tent, and will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. There will be live music, German food and beer specials, games, craft vendors, and more. Perhaps the biggest event in Luzerne County this month is Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza's 25th Anniversary Community Celebration, which will take place on September 21 and will feature the nation's #1 yacht rock band, Yachtley Crew. The arena, which first opened in 1999, has hosted concerts by everyone from Elton John to Prince, Sting, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Stone Temple Pilots, Def Leppard, The Eagles, Cher and Janet Jackson. For families, it’s presented shows such as Disney On Ice, The Harlem Globetrotters, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and Sesame Street Live. And, of course, it is the home of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. We couldn’t imagine Luzerne County without our world class arena, and we congratulate it on 25 remarkable years. The 25th Anniversary Community Celebration is open to the public and tickets are available at arena’s the box office or through its website. And if you need any more proof that the arena is growing no moss, you can head back there on September 29 for another big show when Sebastian Maniscalco - perhaps the most popular stand-up comedian in the world - will take the stage. |
