Spruce Up the Holiday!

Ho! Ho! Ho!

It’s officially Christmastime! And here in Luzerne County and throughout NEPA, holiday-themed events are happening everywhere!

On December 1, “One Christmas Night in Memphis,” will be presented at the Keystone Grand Ballroom at Mohegan Pennsylvania. The show features tribute artists to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis all performing holiday songs. The show is loosely based on the night of December 4, 1956, when the four musical icons actually held impromptu jam session at Sun Studios in Memphis. The one-time-only supergroup was later affectionally dubbed “The Million Dollar Quartet.”

On December 2, the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place under the beautiful rotunda of the Luzerne County Courthouse. There will be holiday music from The County Controller Four (a barbershop quartet) and the Spartan Singers, and appearance from Santa. Also on December 2, The Nutcracker, a musical Christmas ballet, will be presented at The F.M. Kirby Center. The holiday film classic “The Polar Express” will be screened at The Kirby on December 8 and A Motown Christmas – which combines Motown’s greatest hits with holiday classics, comes to The Kirby on December 11. The show features members of The Temptations, The Miracles and The Contours.

On December 4, 5, 6, “An Elvis Christmas Show,” starring Ryan Pelton, will be presented at Penn’s Peak. And if you really want to get festive, The Hive Taphouse at Mohegan Pennsylvania will host SantaCon on December 7. Prizes will be given to “Best Santa,” “Best Elf” and “Best Ugly Sweater.”

Two local theater companies have holiday shows on their schedules this month. The Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre will present “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” on December 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 and The Music Box Dinner Playhouse will present “White Christmas: The Musical” on December 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14 and 15. Another great way to feel the holiday spirit is to join the Reading & Northern Railroad on one of its 80-minute Santa Claus train excursions, which will depart from Pittston on December 7, 8, 21, 22, 23 and 24. The rides will feature holiday music, toasty warm coaches, and of course, Ol’ St. Nick as your host.

Non-holiday themed events happening this month include Daughtry at The F.M. Kirby Center on December 7 and Get The Led Out, a tribute to the mighty Led Zeppelin, at The Kirby on December 28. And the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will be home at the Mohegan Arena on December 4, 11, 13, 14, 18, 21 and 27. And … you can now ice-skate on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre! The temporary ice-rink will remain open throughout the winter, and Visit Luzerne County is a proud sponsor. Enjoy!

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season!

Alan, Sarah, Gaye, Kyle and David
