In Northeastern Pennsylvania, October is traditionally one of the best months of the year! Warm days, cool nights, fall foliage, and crisp outdoor walks and activities all contribute to making autumn a special time, and Luzerne County is no exception. Whether you’re hoping to hike the trails or simply want to head out for a nice, countryside drive, you can visit the fall foliage section of our website for some fine suggestions.

One event that we’re particularly excited about this month is the second annual Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby, which will take place on October 11 at Kirby Park. Presented by Visit Luzerne County and the City of Wilkes-Barre, the event celebrates the mammoth 650-ft home run that Babe Ruth hit near Kirby Park in October of 1926. The blast, a wonderful part of local folklore, is considered to be the longest recorded home run in baseball history. At the Derby, there will be “Sultan of Swat” trophies and prizes for those who hit the longest home runs and “Bambino” trophies and prizes for those who hit the most home runs. October also brings the return of professional hockey to Luzerne County. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, will host their 2025-26 home opener on October 11 at Mohegan Arena and will also hit the ice on October 22, 29 and 31. At Mohegan Pennsylvania casino, you can catch great standup comedy at Wise Crackers on October 4, October 10-11, October 17-18, and October 24-25.

The fabulous F.M. Kirby Center has 13 events on tap this month, including The Vampire Circus on October 2, the Luzerne County Arts & Entertainment Hall of Fame 2025 Induction Ceremony on October 4, comedian Rob Schneider on October 9, The Fab Four, a Beatles tribute, on October 12, Amy Grant on October 14, Ben Folds on October 16 and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Chicago, on October 29.

Looking for more live music? Penn’s Peak, located just outside of Luzerne County in Jim Thorpe, is a terrific venue designed and built just for music. And this month, they’ll present a tribute to The Carpenters on October 1, a special Pink Floyd show on October 3, and a performance by former Queensryche vocalist Geoff Tate on October 4. The River Street Jazz Café in Wilkes-Barre has 12 shows on its schedule this month, including The Dude Ranch: A Tribute to Blink 182, on October 9, and The Pink Floyd Project on October 31.

The Benny Brewing Co. will hold its annual Brewmaster's Club BBQ on October 5 and its Harvest Fest on October 25. On October 3, the Osterhout Free Library will host its annual Brewsterhout Rooftop Party at the Intermodal Parking Garage, which overlooks downtown Wilkes-Barre, and October 16 Coffee Inclusive will host a Blues, Brews, and BBQs Celebration of Inclusion at the Susquehanna Brewing Company.

The Luzerne County Historical Society will host its annual Downtown Wilkes-Barre Ghost Walks on October 17 and 18, where partakers can learn all about some of Wilkes-Barre’s haunted past. Wilkes-Scarre will host several events throughout downtown Wilkes-Barre during Halloween week, the Luzerne County Department of Emergency Services will hold a Truck-or-Treat event in October 12 at its 911 Center in Hanover Township and the City of Wilkes-Barre will host a Trick-or-Treat event on Public Square on October 26.
