Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Visual Mood-it's one of those brands that kind of sneaks up on you. Founded in 2016 in Toronto, this women-led swimwear company has carved out a pretty interesting niche in the crowded beachwear market. And honestly? They're doing something different.
The brand's whole vibe centers around reversible swimwear, which is basically genius when you think about it. Visual Mood was founded by a deep understanding of a shared "need" among women-the desire to feel both stylish and comfortable, with particular attention to swimwear and activewear. But what really sets them apart is this East-meets-West design philosophy. Head designer Lori Zhao, who was born in China and moved to Toronto after exploring both east and west of the world, takes her inspiration from both the beautiful oriental East and the dynamic yet chic West.
Notice how they're not trying to be everything to everyone. Their focus is pretty specific: one-piece swimsuits, bikinis, yoga wear, and accessories with vintage-inspired prints. The reversible aspect means you're essentially getting two swimsuits in one, which travelers absolutely love. And the prints? They're not your typical tropical florals-there's an artistic quality that feels more curated than mass-market.
The company ships worldwide from their Toronto base, with several warehouses in Toronto and Asia, dispatching packages according to inventory quantity in different warehouses, though most orders are dispatched from Toronto. They've also built up a decent social media following-43K followers on Instagram-and they're active on TikTok where reversible swimsuit try-ons perform particularly well.
Pricing sits in that mid-range sweet spot where quality feels justified but it's not luxury-brand territory. Free shipping kicks in at $119+ orders, which is pretty standard. They run sales fairly regularly, and their BOGO 50% off promotions are popular with customers stocking up for vacation season.
What's interesting is how they've positioned themselves against bigger players like Cupshe and Summersalt. Visual Mood leans harder into the reversible concept and that vintage-meets-modern aesthetic. It's not fast fashion, but it's not slow fashion either-somewhere in between, with an emphasis on versatile pieces that work beyond just the beach.
The sustainability angle is there too, though they don't beat you over the head with it. The brand resonates with customers who appreciate their captivating prints, sustainable materials, and reversible clothing. In an industry that's increasingly conscious about waste, the whole "two looks in one" concept actually makes environmental sense.
