Editor's Take

So here's the thing about Volcom-it's not just another surf brand slapping logos on t-shirts. Founded back in 1991 by two friends who basically said "screw it" after an epic snowboarding trip to Tahoe, this company has been living by its "True To This" mantra for over three decades now. And honestly? That rebellious spirit still shows.

What makes Volcom different is how it actually started. Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall literally ran their first operations out of their bedrooms-Richard handled headquarters from Newport Beach, Tucker managed sales from Huntington Beach. First year sales? A whopping $2,600. But they weren't trying to build an empire overnight. They were just making clothes for people who lived and breathed skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding.

Fast forward to today, and Volcom's become this global lifestyle brand that somehow managed to grow up without selling out. They've got everything from boardshorts and hoodies to technical outerwear and footwear. The iconic stone logo is instantly recognizable-you've probably seen it at skate parks, beaches, and mountain resorts worldwide. In 2019, Authentic Brands Group acquired the company, which gave them even more resources to expand.

But here's where it gets interesting. While the brand itself is thriving online and through major retailers like Tillys and Macy's, the standalone retail stores in the U.S. hit a rough patch. In February 2025, Liberated Brands (which operated the physical Volcom stores) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, closing all remaining U.S. locations. Over 100 stores shut down. It's a sign of the times-fast fashion and changing consumer habits have been brutal on specialty retail.

Still, Volcom's not going anywhere. The brand continues strong internationally with stores across Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. And their online presence is solid. They're also genuinely committed to sustainability, using organic cotton, recycled polyester, and partnering with organizations like 1% for the Planet. That's not just marketing fluff-they've been walking that walk for years.

What really sets Volcom apart is the culture. This isn't corporate apparel designed by people who've never touched a skateboard. The company sponsors legit athletes, produces actual surf and skate films, and even relaunched Volcom Entertainment (their record label from the '90s). They get it because they live it. The team riders, the ambassadors, the whole vibe-it's authentic in a way that's increasingly rare.

Whether you're into their classic graphic tees, their technical snow gear, or just appreciate a brand with actual roots in action sports, Volcom delivers quality stuff that holds up. Prices are reasonable for what you get, and the fit tends to run true to size with that slightly relaxed, California-cool aesthetic. Just maybe skip the physical store hunt and shop online instead.
