Editor's Take

You know those car floor mats that actually work? The ones that don't slide around or let water seep through to your carpet? That's basically WeatherTech's whole thing, and they've turned it into something of an empire.

Founded back in 1989 by David MacNeil, the company started because he was frustrated with the quality of vehicle floor mats - they didn't contain dirt well and weren't easy to clean. At the time, MacNeil was working at AMG (yeah, the Mercedes performance division), so he knew a thing or two about quality. Instead of just complaining about it, he did something about it.

What's interesting is how they've stuck to their guns on the whole American manufacturing angle. WeatherTech claims over 95% of its products are manufactured in the United States at its plants in Illinois. That's not nothing when you consider how many companies have moved production overseas. They've got this massive facility in Bolingbrook, Illinois - we're talking factories, warehouses, customer service, the whole operation under one roof.

The FloorLiner is their bread and butter, but they've expanded way beyond that. They're primarily known for their FloorLiner brand of heavy-duty rubber floor mats, which they also manufacture for companies such as Volkswagen and Kia. Other products made by the company include other heavy-duty floor mats and trunk liners, windshield sun shades, mudflaps, and cupholder accessories. And here's where it gets kind of cool - they've branched into home and pet products too. So the same precision engineering that goes into protecting your car's interior now applies to your mudroom or your dog's feeding station.

They're also huge in motorsports. WeatherTech is the title sponsor of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) SportsCar Championship, currently officially known as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The company also became the title sponsor of Laguna Seca Raceway, which was officially renamed to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. If you've ever watched the Super Bowl, you've probably seen their commercials - they've been running them since 2014, which is pretty impressive for a company that makes floor mats.

The factory store in Bolingbrook is actually worth mentioning. It's not your typical retail experience - they've got a café with complimentary drinks, product displays where you can actually touch and test everything, and they'll even install products on your vehicle while you wait. It's like they took the idea of a factory outlet and made it actually enjoyable.

What really sets them apart is the custom-fit approach. They use laser measurements and reverse engineering to create products that fit specific vehicle makes and models exactly. No universal "one size fits most" nonsense. And they back it up with a lifetime limited warranty, which tells you they're pretty confident in what they're making.

So yeah, WeatherTech took something as mundane as floor mats and turned it into a legitimate American manufacturing success story. They're not trying to be everything to everyone - they just do vehicle and home protection really, really well.
