- The so-called “razor-throat” COVID variant—officially named NB.1.8.1 or “Nimbus”—is a fast-spreading subvariant of Omicron.
As of mid-May, it accounted for nearly 11% of global cases, up from just 2.5% in January, and has been detected in at least 15 U.S. states.
- At the same time, wildfire season is intensifying. The National Interagency Fire Center has raised the national Preparedness Level to 3 out of 5, signaling increased wildfire activity and worsening air quality in many regions.
