You know what's wild about Wendy's? Most people think they know the story-square burgers, sassy Twitter, that whole thing. But there's actually way more going on here than meets the eye.
So yeah, Dave Thomas started this thing back in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio, and named it after his daughter. Classic origin story, right? But here's what gets me: the company's still committed to fresh, never frozen beef and made-to-order square hamburgers, which sounds simple until you realize how hard that actually is to pull off at scale. We're talking about more than 7,000 restaurants worldwide-that's a lot of fresh beef to coordinate.
And then there's the whole social media phenomenon. With over 3.8 million Twitter followers, Wendy's basically revolutionized how fast food brands talk to people online. Circa 2017, Wendy's realized its play-it-safe corporate social media strategy was for the birds. The strenuous approval process wasn't conducive to cultivating an organic, engaged base of loyal followers, so they eliminated bureaucratic reviews for their Twitter account. That's actually pretty bold for a massive corporation.
But here's something most people don't know: Wendy's moved their headquarters to Dublin, Ohio in January 2006, and they've got this whole sustainability thing going on with campus gardens and pollinator habitats. Throughout the year, the campus organic garden boasts a variety of herbs, garlic, peppers and tomatoes. We use the garden for educational events and culinary experiences, including in our campus café menu. Kind of unexpected for a burger chain, honestly.
The menu's evolved too. Most Wendy's locations start serving breakfast at 6:30 AM and continue until 10:30 AM, which is relatively new territory for them. And they're not just doing basic breakfast either-they're actually trying to compete with the big breakfast players.
What really strikes me is how they've managed to stay relevant without losing their identity. Dave built his business on the premise, "Quality is our Recipe®," which remains the guidepost of the Wendy's system. That's not just marketing speak when you consider they're still doing fresh beef while most competitors went frozen decades ago.
The whole thing's just more thoughtful than you'd expect from a fast food chain that became famous for roasting people on Twitter.
