Editor's Take

There's something kind of perfect about a boot company that's been around since 1883 still making boots in Michigan. Not many brands can say they've survived three centuries of American industry, but Wolverine? They're still here, still cranking out work boots that people actually want to wear.

Wolverine World Wide, Inc. is a publicly traded American footwear manufacturer based in Rockford, Michigan, known for its eponymous brand, Wolverine Boots and Shoes, as well as other brands, such as Hush Puppies, Chaco, and Merrell. But the Wolverine boot itself-that's the heart of the operation. With relentless craftsmanship, their Michigan company produced work boots and gloves famous for comfort and toughness. By 1903, Krause and his sons were producing 300 boots a day in their new factory.

The iconic 1000 Mile Boot is basically the soul of the brand. First introduced in the 1910s, it got its name because-wait for it-it was built to last 1000 miles of wear. Workers loved the soft, long-lasting shell horsehide leather, and today, Wolverine still handcrafts this American icon using the same methods. That's not marketing fluff; they actually mean it.

But here's where it gets interesting. While Wolverine loves to wave the American flag (and rightfully so, given their heritage), the reality is more nuanced. Most of their boots are manufactured overseas-primarily in China and Vietnam, with some production in Mexico. Only two lines are still made in America: the 1000 Mile Boot and the Ramparts. Recently, they've partnered with a facility in Texas to launch a new made-in-America program, starting with the Workshop Wedge boot at $249.95. It's a small step, but it shows they're trying to bring more production home.

The Factory is the latest improvement to Wolverine Worldwide's 300,000-square-foot global headquarters. Additional on-site amenities for team members include: Subsidized daycare and early education center for children six-weeks old to five-years old, Fitness center including personal training and group classes taught by certified personal trainers. They've clearly invested in their Rockford campus-four miles of hiking trails, dog daycare, the works. It's the kind of workplace that makes you think they actually care about their people.

The boots themselves? They're built around technologies like DuraShocks cushioning and the newer Infinity System, which combines years of expertise into a multi-layered comfort system. Steel toes, composite toes, waterproof membranes, slip-resistant soles-all the features you'd expect from a serious work boot. And they're not just for construction workers anymore. Wolverine recently partnered with Paramount+'s hit show "Landman" for product placement, putting their Alpha and Rancher boots on screen in the oil fields of West Texas. It's their first venture into TV product placement, and honestly, it makes sense. The show's about gritty, hard work-exactly what Wolverine has always represented.

The company's also pushing hard on Project Bootstrap, their initiative to support skilled trades. With only 9 percent of high school students pursuing careers in the trades, there's a massive labor shortage looming. Wolverine has contributed over $2 million to organizations supporting skilled trades education. Whether that's genuine altruism or smart marketing (probably both), it's addressing a real problem.
