Here's the thing about Woodcraft-they've been around since 1928, which in the woodworking world basically makes them ancient royalty. And honestly? They've earned that status.
Walk into any of their 85-ish stores scattered across the country, and you'll immediately get why woodworkers have been loyal to them for nearly a century. It's not just the tools (though they carry everything from hand planes to CNC machines). It's the vibe. These aren't your typical big-box employees who couldn't tell a mortise from a tenon if their lives depended on it.
The staff actually knows their stuff. Like, genuinely knows it. Ask about grain direction or which chisel works best for dovetails, and you'll get a real answer from someone who's probably spent their weekend in their own shop. That's rare these days.
But here's what really sets them apart-their classes. Most stores offer hands-on workshops where you can actually learn techniques instead of just watching YouTube videos and hoping for the best. Want to master box joints? They've got a class. Curious about Japanese joinery? Yep, they teach that too. It's like having a mentor without the awkward small talk.
Their online presence is solid, but the real magic happens in-store. There's something about running your hands over different wood species or testing the weight of a hand plane that you just can't get from clicking "add to cart." Plus, they've got this 90-day return policy that's pretty generous-though honestly, if you're not happy with a Lie-Nielsen plane, woodworking might not be for you.
The prices aren't bargain-basement, but they're not trying to be. Quality costs money, and Woodcraft has built their reputation on carrying brands that'll last decades, not months. When you're investing in tools that might outlive you, paying a bit more upfront makes sense.
